Hi. This is my first post and I’m hoping you can help me out. I’ve gotten a lot of great info from this site, but haven’t seen anything relating to my particular coin scenario. While coin roll hunting I came across this 1971 penny that stuck out amongst the others, literally. It’s slightly bigger than a ‘normal’ penny and stuck out of the stack a bit when I was separating copper from clads and barely fits into a penny flip. Weight is 3.0g. The obverse rim looks very deep all the way around and there’s a ton of room around the details. The reverse rim drops off around the 4 o’clock position, where there seems to be a lot of extra space to the right of the monument and “T”. The edge shows a ridge that goes from the “E” in “CENT” all the way, clockwise, to the second “A” in “AMERICA”. So what is it? Broadstrike? Foreign Planchet? Tilted die? Thanks for your help.
First, welcome to the neighborhood! Can you take some photos of the edge. I see something on your reverse photos, between 12 & 3 o'clock and between 6 & 9 o'clock, that I'd like to examine more closely. In the future, when taking photos of the full coin, you should take them from directly overhead. Taking photos at an angle tends to hide things.
hey BradstreetJ welcome to CT. yea your coin is a broadstrike error. and potty dollar 1878 last quote tells you everything you need to know......good luck man
