Evening, I think it is a well placed die chip that gives the appearance of the letter D but wanted to make sure. What does everyone think?
    Thanks again

I think I'm confused . What do you see ? I see a normal 1962 D Penny issued and struck in the U. S by American workers at the Denver Mint in Denver Colorado . NO CHIPS . :p

I'm not sure but I think the OP is referring to this (red arrow pointing at).

It looks like a letter D (I'd like to see what @Fred Weinberg thinks about it)The inside part of it appears to be the same size as the inside part of the D mint mark.

I think it's just PMD . I know what it looks like but I don't see how it would be possible , do you ?
I have a tile in my bathroom that has an image of Jesus . Do I think its a sign ? NO just Pareidolia .

I don't know what it is. Probably PMD but anything's possible. Seems unlikely but maybe the mint worker who punched in the mint mark dropped the punch and it landed on Abe's jacket. lol

Don't jump the gun, just yet. It could be the result of a dropped element, but I would like to see a better close-up. I don't think it is, but I'd like to at least give the OP the benefit of the doubt.

You see Jesus SensibleSal? I always see Marilyn Monroe...guess it might be an indication of where I'm going to end up...is it hot in here?...ha!!!

I tried looking for a chip but also read about a push type of strike and there was an example that might explain it. I just enjoy posting some of the strange things that can happen but also want to make sure I'm not putting a jewel back in change jar to cash in.

Interesting, I could see it as a possible dropped element. It just seems too small for a D/mm or a D/God. @Bargainbidder maybe you can see if it is from the top of an R (AMER). A dropped element will be the same size as a filled letter or design on the coin.

It does appear to look like a D on the collar. I would wait for more experienced opinions. I like the coin and would keep it. Good luck

The trail of die chips is the only thing that has me thinking it is a die chip but who knows? It could be the engraver dropped the punch as Thomas indicated. Will keep it and mark as mystery coin and put in box with other anomalies marked with just enough info to send whoever in family finds it after I pass, on a treasure hunt...I'll get the last laugh after all...lol

On the closeup it doesn't look like the mint mark.

If this was the case, there would be thousands of these in collectors hands. Dropping a punch on the working die would make this mark on every coin the die struck.
