Thanks, HT, I ran out of steam at about S-175! That looks like a winner! Let me guess-- not nearly as scarce as the S-165?
A S-165 is a high R-3 or low R-4 and a S-187 is a solid R-1. It's amazing how many coppers that are improperly attributed, aren't misattributed where it hurts the seller. Ribbit
Here we have another colonial copper from the same seller as post #56: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150344988094 I messaged the seller about the misattribution error: This is also not a Club Rays variety, but I guess I don't know what I'm talking about with Fugios either? :| Anyone can tell it's not a Club Rays because there is no dash between MIND-YOUR on a Club Ray variety. :| It appears to be either a 16-H or 16-N but I can't be sure on the reverse, since the pics aren't at the right angle to see what I need to see to properly attribute it. http://www.coins.nd.edu/fugio/Newman1-24/fugio.16-N.ex1.obv.jpg http://www.coins.nd.edu/fugio/Newman1-24/fugio.16-N.ex1.rev.jpg http://www.coins.nd.edu/fugio/Newman1-24/fugio.18-H.ex1.rev.jpg I'm leaning towards a 16-H though. Ribbit :| Ps: Here are the 2 Club Ray obverses: http://www.coins.nd.edu/fugio/Newman1-24/fugio.03-D.obv.jpg http://www.coins.nd.edu/fugio/Newman1-24/fugio.04-E.obv.jpg It is NOT one of them! Anyways, the seller repied: After seeing the cr*p you buy and sell; I think your an old Loser sitting in his double wide trailer who paid $5.00 to enjoy EAC, so; stick to selling your dimes and nickles and keep spending money on Conn.; pieces that I would not wipe my a** with...LOSER. But to top that off, they also sent a threatening email: From: Christoph Coussens <coinsoftheworld@live.com> THANKS FOR OPENNING THE EMAIL, THATS ALL I NEEDED. NOW, SIT BACK AND WATCH THE SHOW........LOW RENT TRASH. OH, HAVE A NICE DAY. While they do not phase me one bit, since they have proven who they truly are, I figured I'd share this with ya'll, whilst I sit in in my double-wide chewing on a plug and spitting in the corner. Ribbit
I live with a man like that. He wants me to tell people the truth by pointing out their mistakes and try to correct them in the right direction, but when I try to talk to him about something that he says that is incorrect he flips out!
My momma told me spittoons were for peeps that live in round rooms. :goofer: Just call me Forrest . . . Forrest Toad. Ribbit
Here's one you don't see that often: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=270400658697 At first, I drooled but when I went to attribute it, things didn't match-up. :kewl: I sent it to Tom Deck and he confirmed it is a counterfeit. Ribbit
Here are some commonly seen Massachusett's counterfeits: http://cgi.ebay.com/Massachusetts-Common-Wealth-1788-Coin_W0QQitemZ250449442175 http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-1788-COMMONWEALTH-OF-MASSACHUSETTS-PENNY_W0QQitemZ160344072838 The 2nd one makes me laugh with what they say: "Very Old authentic Piece!" Can't they see the copper plating peeling off the pot metal undernneath? :goof: Ribbit
Here's an interesting one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150356493444&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123 Seller claims it the rare 1807/6 S-272 when it is obviously a 1807 S-271: http://www.largecents.net/collection/coinpics/s271.jpg http://www.largecents.net/collection/coinpics/s272.jpg I've bumped into this seller before, when they listed either a 1799 or 1804 DBC that wasn't the date they said it was and they were very rude when I messaged them, just as they were this time. :eating: Beware of this seller! :hammer: Ribbit
Here's a common error I see on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/1804-DRAPED-BUST-LARGE-CENT-RARE-U-S-COIN_W0QQitemZ160349732953 It isn't an 1804 and the uppermost right berry stem is all you need to compare to know it isn't an 1804: http://www.largecents.net/collection/coinpics/s266c.jpg The problem is peeps want their coins to be the valuable ones so when the date is hard to tell, it has to be one of the rare ones . . . right? :hammer: Ribbit
Here's an interesting one: http://cgi.ebay.com/1805-DRAPED-BUST-LARGE-CENT-1-000-VARIETY-G-to-VG_W0QQitemZ260451666440 It's a 1805 and listed as a 1/000 variety, which doesn't exist! :goof: Ribbit
As always very interesting and informative. In my efforts to learn more about DBC's I enjoy your classes. :thumb: Just don't ask me to take the final yet. This auction item, If I'm seeing straight tonight, is a somewhat knocked around 1805 1/100, that looks like a Sheldon 267. Correct?
Toad you must be correct on all!!! By the time I got the thread all have been removed from ebay!!! Bravo:hail:
It's a S-267 and authentic. I messaged the seller and they said the 1/000 was a typo and I believe them but you still have to watch for typos that make a coin look better than it is. Ribbit
Here's a 1799 that isn't a 1799: http://cgi.ebay.com/Very-Nice-1799-Draped-Bust-Large-Cent-FREE-S-H_W0QQitemZ360175088689 It appears to be a 1798 S-181: http://www.largecents.net/collection/coinpics/s181.jpg The "tell" that it isn't a 1799 is the fraction. It's way too high to be a 1799 but a S-181 has a high "1" in the fraction. Ribbit
Read the Q&A and please message this seller: http://cgi.ebay.com/1788-Massachusetts-Copper-Cent-Colonial-Coin-AUTH_W0QQitemZ160353040881QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item2555c939f1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 They seem to be the type that believes in safety in numbers so let's give them the correct numbers, since this is a common electrotype copy and so far, I'm the only one that has informed them it's a fake. :goof: Ribbit
I've also seen these with a T instead of a R and I've also seen the T on other electrotypes, along with the R but do you you know what they stand for and/or who made them? Ribbit Ps: Thanks for the help. :thumb: They will usually end the auction but this seller is being stubborn. :goof:
