I'm looking for a good book to read about coins. Preferbly U.S. Coins but anything that is enjoyable will do. All the books I seem to find are basic stuff or are price guides. I would love a book about the history of some of rare U.S Coins. Any Suggestions?
I have but id prefer more info on coins, especially rare ones. Not just price guides. Is there any book that has the stories such as the 1804 dollar, 1913 nickel, and the 1933 $20 gold. And more.
If you're looking for basic info on the hobby itself, I recommend "Coin Collecting 101," and "Everything Coin Collecting." Both of those were rather enjoyable reads considering how dry the topic of coins can be.
The Expert's Guide to Collecting & Investing in Rare Coins: Secrets Of Success Sounds like a good choice. Has anyone read that one?
I have read it and enjoyed it. Lot of good information as well as basic explanations of grading, rarity, condition rarity, etc. A good amount of history as well. It's also a good resource to go back to. I also like Lange's Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels. All of Scott Travers' books are worth reading as well.
I just read "Illegal Tender". It's a pretty interesting story about the 1933 Double Eagles and uses the original investigative info well in telling the story.
There is 100 Greatest U.S. Coins: http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/product/100-greatest-us-coins.html but shop around, you may be able to get a better deal. then, of course, lest we forget: http://www.whitmanbooks.com/Default.aspx?Page=55&HTMLName=ReviewUpcoming_1208 have fun!
Try Q. David Bowers' "The Expert's Guide to Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins." A gold mine of information. Best Regards, George VDB Coins
"Buy the book before you buy the coin." -- Aaron Feldman Several books by Q. David Bowers have been recommnded. If you want great narratives, you might enjoy The Numismatist's bedside companion (1987) The Numismatist's fireside companion (1988) The Numismatist's weekend companion (1992). I'm going to add one to your list to consider: "The US Mint and Coinage: by Don Taxay ISBN No. 0-915262-68-1 A very through history of the mint and US coins
A very entertaining and insightful book on the history of coinage in the US . I t was given to me as a Christmas present a few years ago by my sons girlfriend . rzage:hatch::hammer:
I cannot believe no one recommended In Yankee Doodle's Pocket? http://bowmanstonepress.com/ If you're looking for a coin book to actually read, look no further and the author is my bud and semi neighbor (lives 30 minutes away) so I can get you a better deal through him than anywhere else, if you are interested (not that there's any way you wouldn't be interested). "i [/QUOTE] In my post on "Coin Books (US)" from earlier today, I listed that as one of the three "must" books for every numismatist interested in US coinage. Taxay disappeared in India a few years after the book came out. We believe that he was on his way to Nepal (perhaps Tibet), and was never heard from again.
