Hello, I'm currently working on a set of peace dollars and have a goal of compiling a set of minimum AU pieces. Currently I have the majority of dates, just lacking a 24-s, 34-s, 35-s, and 27-s. My set is mostly AU (couple MS) with 3-4 pieces at XF (including '21 and '28). At this point, I could spend the $300-400 and get the remaining coins. But I am also considering just purchasing an AU+ set to cherrypick for a nice AU set. This way I wouldn't have to worry about as much of a mark up for the pieces I still need, and those I would like to upgrade. Based on my current situation, I was hoping to get the opinions of fellow collectors on the board. Does anyone have any suggestions for purchasing such a set and pricing? Thanks for your time!
If you can get the set for a good price go for it. If you can get the set for a good price go for it. That way you have many more coins to match up and get the set looking the way you want then if any are needed after that sell the excess and look for that one or two so you can really finish it off right.
Agreed, being able to pick through a set and fill yours out with matching coins would be ideal and then you could sell off the left over individually.
Hi. Here's the direct link to the PCGS Price Guide on the Peace strikes: http://www.pcgs.com/prices/PriceGuideDetail.aspx?MS=1&PR=1&c=26&title=Peace+Dollar. I don't see the numbers on the complete sets, there. However, going from the file I have from Feb 2007 (which did list the complete sets), they broke down, in your range, as follows: EF, $1423; AU, $2241; 60, $4439. Adjust for 2.5 years of inflation, there you have it! :hammer:
I have a different way of thinking. I would fill the 4 holes with AU or better coins (the 34-S alone will cost you $400). THEN I would go back and do the upgrades STARTING with the 21 and 28. That's my personal style. For instance, I'm on the verge of starting a set of IHC's. In place already are the 1864 "L", 1877, 1908-S and 1909-S. And if I count the ones in my type set I also have the 1859, 1862 and 1909. Ignoring the varieties, I'm now in a position to get the rest of the set in better grades. "Better" is still a TBD.
