New Variety 42-D nickel, not silver

    Split on the bottom of the top of the S serrif and on the right of the leftmost leg of the W. Anyone else see it/opinions?

    Looks like the die is deteriorating and showing it's signs on that coin.

    I can see a little bit of the split on the W, but, without better pic's I would have to lean towards MD.

    One thing to keep in mind is that more than 50% of the nickels circa. 1942-1945 exhibit some doubling on WE TRUST and even the date. It is master die doubling and it adds no value to the coin.

    If you check out your five-cent coins carefully, you all probably have at least one example already.
