I started a thread last week stating that my mom found some coins that my grandfather had missplaced. Well I got them this weekend and manage to get a few pictures. Like usual I was in a hurry so the pics are not the best, but not horrible. The first is an 1804 large cent . from the diagnostics it is an original and not a restrike. the biggest tell is the die is rotated abou 15 degrees or so. The cudd is also an identifier. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated
1801 cent This one makes me sad. the coin, an 1801 cent with initials someone thought they had to scratch in it. On the bright side the coin had $10 listed on the 2x2. :thumb:
Last one 1796 this one was identified as a 1796, but is in very sad shape. the plip was marked hole filler. :smile
Those are some great coins and ones I would like someday in just about any grade for their historical nature. Congrats.
Not bad at all. Unless it is an electrotype the 1804 looks to be real. The 1795 is a S-76b, pretty common but this one ha nice detal before it was buried and corroded. The 1801 is a very popular vareity, S-219 the three errors reverse. 1/000, no left stem on the wreath, and the U of United punched in upsde down and then corrected so it looks like II. It is also a later state with the arc crack through the base of the II. (I was hoping it had a blunt first 1 in the date, then it would be a S-218 and even in that condition worth between $1500 and $2000 . The 1796 is a S-83, a slightly scarcer variety (R-4). Unfortunately it is badly beaten up.
I concur with Conder! :thumb: I remember when you made the announcement that you had some coins coming in from your family and you had mentioned the date 1804 and said large cent with it and I hoped it was and it is. You are sooooooo lucky! Nice coppers! :eat: Ribbit
