Of all the Sacagawea Dollar coins minted in 2000, only 5500 of them, or 0.00043% of the overall total, were produced by the first die variety, and all of them found their way into private hands through Cheerios boxes. As of 2009, only a few sales of the "Cheerios Dollars" have been recorded, but the selling price per coin has reached as high as $11,500. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I know the high of $11,500 has been toppled as I got this off of an old site but this was quite an education for me. Was anyone on this site lucky enough to get ahold of one of these "Cheerios Dollars"?
I wasn't, but I sure wish I was! I don't think they did that promotion here....I am sure that my mom would have gotten one for me if they did.
I am a former owner of a cheerios dollar. I was lucky enough to buy one in the original packaging. PCGS graded is an MS67 and it was subsequently sold. I owned it for about 3 weeks... but that's good enough for me.
Back in 2000 I wasn't into coin collecting I think I took mine out of the packaging and put it in my pocket change.... But I do believe my father still has one. :high5:
Haven't read the links, but so far only one of these cheerios dollars has turned up in circulation. There are bound to be others, but they would be so thinly spread that if even all 5,500 were put into circulation and all you had were 2000 Sacs, you would have to go through an average of 117 two thousand con bags to fnd one, or roughly one for every 234,000 coins that you examined. Snce not all of them went into crculation, and there are many more small dollars out there than just the 2000 Sac dollars, the odds of finding one by roll searching is much worse than even those figures.
An interesting topic, worth throwing in my 2c as not all the Cheerio dollars had this early variety.Creates the problem of having to open one out its packaging to know for sure which in turn deflates potential value, unless of course you get one with the early design.
Very true and good point. Although there have been estimates, I don't think that the true mintage is known or will ever be truly known. From what I understand, you had to send the coin in the original packaging into a TPG completely intact and they would label it as the Cheerios dollar (at least with PCGS), but there were a few that did not have the pattern, but these are also labeled as the Cheerios dollar. If you are buying one, you need to make sure that it is the one with the detailed feathers or there really isn't any value for it. For the record, I have never seen a slabbed Cheerios dollar that wasn't the one with the pattern, so I can't speak from experience, just what I have read.
Since the article appeared in NGC new article. I've been looking for one and no such luck. http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?IDArticle=279 Since the spring of 2006. I've gone thru & looked at (2302) 2000's P and haven't found one. I did find a wounded eagle variety but no Cheerios. Drats ! If anyone is thinking that i get only 2000 P's your wrong. They are mixed with SBA's, Pres dollars and other Sac years also. ugh. Well that's the fun in looking and searching.
Oh here's an error find on a 2009 sacagawea. I wish I could find a decent error, I found a couple off center coins but you really gotta pull out the magnifying glass to see those. Oh well, my day will come... :crying: http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-213415
