My son and I came across this while CRH today. Not sure what causes this, or if it’s anything special. The image is clearly doubled as the photos show, just not what kind of doubling. Let me know.
Thanks for the smartass response. It’s people like you that I adore most in life, because it’s a daily reminder that my life could always be worse.
Same coin, however, I just noticed this. Shape and appearance Looks like a double of the eye-lid or brow. Maybe doubling at the eye as well, I’m not certain. die deterioration as well I would assume, yeah?
As our fellow enthusiasts noted, an overworked die that saw a clash or two. In your opening photos, the areas to the left and right of the dome have heavy grooves made when removing a decent clash. If you go to Maddieclashes, you will see a number of clashed nickels that will give you an idea on how heavy a hand a toolmaker would need to obscure the clash. The area at the bridge of Jefferson's nose is the same case. It's quite possible that the hammer and anvil dies that clashed were an ordered pair and were both 'cleaned up' to remove the witness marks from the clash. Again, a heavy hand removed material from the die face and along with die attrition, details and devices were lost. What would be awesome would be to see the first few nickels with the fresh clash marks in them. Probably a fairly strong clash initially, but with the touching up of the dies and wear...made obscured to the average person.
Awesome thanks!!! About to post a 1972 nickel and this certainly looks like a DDO to me, but not sure.
There has been a wave of snarky responses of late and PennyRich has gotten a share of that. Obvious connection between the title and your response and I suppose it just got swept up into the noise and mistaken.
I do apologize if I misunderstood your post. But as Kevin stated, the snarky comments lately have quickly grown tiresome. I’m here to learn, not compete. Again, my apologies.
No problems as I do understand. I've been a member for almost 6 years and I've seen more than I care to. My original response was in no way meant to be a snarky or demeaning comment.
In today's society of distancing ones self from others, humor is a good release. When I saw your subject title, my first thought was to post pretty much the same as @Collecting Nut but then saw how well you pointed out your question with good photos. I feel like we all need to lighten up once in a while, so shouldn't be offended by it. "When humor goes, there goes civilization." –Erma Bombeck
No, you are good natured about it, and want to learn, takes a "H" of a long time to learn the basics. A persons eye wants to please the brain, so often it does.
