What do you think? Any chance the darker quarter is an error. It weighs the same as a regular quarter. It doesn’t seem to just be dirty when I look at it (but I guess it could be), and the edge looks different too. Thanks!
That guess is correct. As stated before.. It is Environmental Toning Damage to the Cupro-Nickel clad layer. The Copper toned. And the reeded edge wore away. All damage. I metal detect. Clad coins and Nickels are affected by soil, dirt, sand, the elements and harsh chemicals. Here are examples from my detecting hunts..
