National Park Quarters

Hey guys,

Do any of you know what the designs of the 2010 National Park quarters will look like, are there any proposed designs?

Also I can't find any Dansco albums for the Park quarters, will they be released closer towards 2010?

All I know is that it's not supposed to be out until sometime in 2010, and I haven't seen any Coin World articles with any proposed designs yet.

This actually may be a good opportunity for artists out there to submit designs to the Mint for this next series.

I think I'll write to Congress and request that Washington's bust on the obverse be changed to a facing view. This would match the Jefferson nickel and the paper money. This is a chance to have some change in our change

National Park Quarter Schedule "The National Park Quarters would be issued starting in 2010 after the conclusion of the 50 State Quarters Program and the District of Columbia & US Territories Quarters Program. The coins would be issued at a rate of five new designs per year, resulting in a duration of 11 years.
At the option of the Secretary of the Treasury, the program could be extended for a second cycle. This would mean the program could potentially include 112 coins and run for over 22 years."

Wow, I'm glad the CACC had the guts and foresight to recommend Teddy Roosevelt to replace the Washington quarter. Great idea. Tough to pass through Congress. Lots of resistance to replace Washington. I hope it happens though. We need some real change in our coinage, not half-baked changes. Like the Jefferson nickel. Great western commemerative series. I thought it was creative and artistic. And they even changed Jefferson's portrait. Gutsy move. But then they basically go back to the old view of Monticello. Even a different view would have been a better choice. They already had the original reverse idea from the first models. That would have been great. But they played it safe. I hope they can be more courageous with the quarters.

But if you follow up with the links and such you will find that the only recommendation the CCAC has made is the suggestion to replace Washington with Theodore Roosevelt. Apparently they haven't seen any designs yet either.

Under the law all 56 locations to be honored must be selected within 270 days of the signing of the legislation. We are around day 215 and sofar we haven't heard a thing. Production will have to start within four months and designs haven't even been proposed yet. I think we are going to see just how good the mints computer "drawing direct to finished dies system is going to be, and whether or not it will be able to create dies that can produce a coinable output.

At the moment I don't hold a lot of faith in the system.

 

Well, certainly a good point on timing Conder101. However, I don't usually pay attention to the Mint and Treasury upholding their own timelines but I will keep my eyes peeled and fingers crossed for the program to survive and come to fruition at a later date, albeit not as ambitious as a 112 designs and running for 22 years. That just seems too extravagant.

I can't wait for the New Jersey Turnpike quarters in 2015. I think the Exit 8 coin might be a sleeper.

Well they would have a little problem not keeping to those timelines as they are not a matter of internal scheduling but rather written into the law. They HAVE to have the list of all 56 locations ready by the 270th day, and they have to start issuing the coins at a rate of five per years starting in 2010. Typically they want to have a supply of coins ready as close to Jan 1 as possible and that would mean they would have to start producing and stockpiling at least in December as they usually do. It's now Aug 1st and there have been no design proposals They have five months before they need to start production and the CFA and CCAC do not meet all the time (How often do they meet? Something like every couple months?) They will be hard pressed to get the designs and get them past the CFA and CCAC and into production in five months.

I've probably got your PM's I just haven't looked at them yet (I know I've gotten at least five since the last time I looked at them. I'm not deliberately ignoring them, I just don't check them until I'm finished reviewing all the threads, and then I have a tendency to forget to look at them.

I'm sour on the series, but then again, I live in Illinois, not out west where they HAVE national parks. No one around here knows much about national parks, but we've heard of Yellowstone. I know a guy who visited it once.

 

So then this would make for a proverbial case of, "the grass is always greener in the other states national parks" :kewl:

 

i will pass this one. the state park quarters. i will stick to statehood quarters instead.

 

you do that. but will you still be reporting mintage figures if and when the program sees the light of day?
