This guy on the CU forum's, made me an offer on my 1911 PCGS AU58 quarter eagle, and look at what he said Is that not the stupidest thing you've heard? He is basically saying that slabbed and raw have no difference, or should have no difference on these coins. Here is my response: So what do you guys think? #1: Newbie who thinks he knows it all, and is trying to rip me off #2: Somebody who has done this a while, and is trying to get a good deal I think I am going with scenario 1, but you never know... I will keep you updated if I get a response, if any. And also, share some stories of some low ball offers you've gotten, I'd like to hear em'
Sounds to me like someone who is trying to buy the coin, not the plastic. Did it really make you feel powerful to call him stupid?
No not really, and I don't think that is the case I honestly believe that he thinks he would be better off buying a raw one, for much cheaper, me, and many others would not just buy these coins raw, these are a dangerous coin to buy raw, as I stated, you cannot tell if it has been puttied, or whizzed, or is even real from pictures. Would I want to buy one on ebay, with no return policy, and raw, and is given an "au" grade by the seller, and save $80? Heck no, I'd want to get the one in the slab, that way it is almost like I have an "insurance" policy, I have something to back up my purchase almost.
It's a fair offer... really any offer is fair, as you've solicited them from the market. Decline it and move on. There are a LOT of folks out there who only offer low ball, and put out 1000's of offers at low ball rate,,, they are declined 99% of the time, but over 1000 offers they pick up 10 super deals... Now if they managed to do this weekly...10 super deals per week * 52 weeks per year, and now you doing something that may be fun ! $$,,, Heck, they could even call themselves a dealer.
So that means that you either disagree with the price guide or the grade assigned by PCGS. If you believe both are accurate, then T$ is correct, it is a lowball offer. Does it make you feel powerful to troll around and disagree with everyone just to be a pain?
Well you go got a point there, you just never know I guess.... When I first read the message, it came off as a little "showy", kinda "know it all like". Reading it again, I know that is not what he meant But I guess we all gotta get a little mad, and blow off some steam... :goofer: Now, I still don't know if $225 is a fair offer, even I wouldn't, and haven't offered that low, the lowest I have ever offered on a AU58 quarter eagle (common date) is around $260, and the market is not at what he is talking about. ($200-$225)
Well, I'm not disagreeing with you completely. But IF this guy knows what he's doing, then he would be just as well buying a raw one. As for the low ball offer, well if you're trying to negotiate, you gotta start somewhere. And it seems low, but not insultingly low. I wouldn't call the guy stupid just based on that.
Hey T$ It was a lowball offer, I agree with your principles as far as PCGS slabbed coins and that to buy raw unless from the mint or a personal friend is just silly. On the exception of doing business with a party previously and there is somewhat of a relationship. Sometimes as sellers we endure these moments. Stick to your guns and you will be fine and unless he responds that your number is fair, just keep moving no need to make it personal.
Still never really called the guy stupid, I said his actions were stupid. I do stupid things too, we all have, but that doesn't necessarily mean we are stupid
I agree T$. When it comes to those coins you have to buy it slabbed. Best of luck to that guy who buys them raw on ebay... yikes.
T$ be careful when using Heritage as a reference for prices they add the buyers premium to the final hammer price so although it's the final price so to speak it's not the net to the seller and is a little misleading I know I've used them in the past. The attached link was for the last item I sold with them in Sept 2008 L.B. and the hammer price was $55,000 the total they advertise as the selling price was $63,500 includes buyers premium. http://currency.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=3502&Lot_No=13196&src=pr
You do raise a good point, and I think I should look into that But even with the BP, nothing has sold in the $200 range, or at least I don't think (off the top of my head)
I would have to concur with T$ on this one, He only asked if it is the stupidest thing we ever heard. In no way did he directly accuse said person of being a stupid person, nor did he name sad person to cause any disrespect.
hmm..what is it I always read on here? a coin is only worth as much as you can sell it for or similar?
Is that not the stupidest thing you've heard? NO!! If you don't like the offer you should just say "No Thanks" and move on.
Dready - lets us know the best price that you can find a PCGS Graded AU-58 1911 Quarter Eagle. If you find one at $200, buy it and put it in the Open section for $225. You could make money doing that. I really do not think will find this. Maybe for a raw coin - and yes I understand people pay a premium for the protection and safety a slab offers. T$ - the only thing you did wrong was try to explain you thought process. As mentioned you should have just declined and moved on. While a low offer it really was not that bad at $225. Only 20%(or so) less than what you are willing to accept - I routinely deduct that, if not more for offers to some. Usually I am trying to get them down to Heritage auction prices - if the coin is one I want. Just my humble opinion.
Exactly my sentiments. The guy that made the offer was just reaching out as a form of negotiation. With your written response back to him combined with your bashing of him in here, really makes my mind up who I would want to do business with. I hope he moves on and take my advice. BTW, how much were your S+H fees. Maybe they are so overinflated that he may be bringing that into play as well.
