Hey ya'all , Starting in late 2021, the US Government will begin “Pennies for Freedom,” a penny reclamation campaign designed to collect the estimated 23 trillion unused pennies sitting in people’s homes and coin jars. The pennies will then be melted and the copper will be used for green energy projects throughout the US.
I can't believe no one did a thread about this or did I miss something . :jawdrop:. Follow link pleeeeese .... Tell me what you think , you dooo think don't you ?:hilarious::hilarious:
I think this sucks , I mean how can they just discontinue producing this Iconic and historical treasure . What does everyone think will happen ?

Not clicking a link to some weird website to an article from 2019. That said if they really were going to actually stop production (which they aren't as of now) don't you think there would be articles all over numismatic sites and magazines and not just a single old link from an obscure site?

I think it’s a bit early for April fools‘ day jokes. If you read carefully, that‘s what the blog was about...

e.g. „you will be hard-pressed to find stores willing to accept them after April 1, 2022“

Either way it's just old speculation that for whatever reason was presented as factual information that could confuse a lot of people thinking this is really going to happen when it isn't.

The article states that it is a hoax for April Fools Day.

This "article" has been popping up from time to time on coin forums ever since it first came out back in 2019. Seems like every few months someone "rediscovers" it.

Over the years, I have become less and less impressed with the so-called "green energy" promotions. The more I read and the more I hear, the more I believe its just a bunch of hogwash. So, I will keep my "copper" pennies. What they have done to the current penny is a shame and disgrace.

I would stay away from the website you're reading this stuff on.
If you want to read about green energy I recommend going to Energy production company websites.

Also if the "US MINT" has stated that they were going to cease production of something, don't you think you would be able to find it on the US MINT's website? somewhere on it? anywhere? Because all of this would be based on some statement from the US MINT (always try to go to the root source of information for confirmation of anything).

Also pennies haven't really been copper since 1982. They're mostly zinc and they work perfectly fine for what they have been designed for.

    have fun YMMV

    steve westermeier Cancer sucks!

    I'm all for it.
Only because the last I checked it costs over 2 1/2 cents to make one.
I'll miss 'Abe' but I think it's time!

where did you get 2.5cents ?
When I google it (from non gov't sources) I see 2.1 cents, or 2.06 cents.
When I google it from gov't sources I find 1.43 cents

of course, the US MINT states it costs 1.76 cents to produce and distribute the cent/penny according to their own 2020 biennial report.

If you read their reports you would also find out they are looking at a new alternative penny to try and lower it's costs again ... "Copper Plated Steel (CPS) has been identified as a potential alternative to the Copper Plated Zinc (CPZ) penny. Market research and technical evaluations began in the 2 nd quarter of Calendar Year (CY) 2020 to estimate unit cost, manufacturer’s capacities, and technical feasibility"

    Welcome to CoinTalk!

When you're forming your opinions about green energy, try to make sure you don't base them on April Fool's Day articles. ;)
