For one I break out any and every coin I ever get in a slab. No place for slabs in my collection. All coins go into Albums. I just can't see why anyone would want a pile of plastic and call it a coin collection but many do. For second I've heard many tell me they improved the grade by breaking out coins and resubmitting to another TPGS. Usually going from someone like PCGS to one that no one ever heard of though. I've also seen coins well worth about $1 in slabs so it takes all kinds.
In reality to collectors, who know what they are doing - carls raw coins should bring just as much as a slabbed coin. Each collector should do what they like. Personally I ignore the holder and any little stickers to see if I like the coin - then decide if I am willing to pay the price. Just my opinion - and we all know I do like some problem children.
If you are going to pass on all CAC stickered coins, you are going to be missing out on many really nice coins. You guys can bash the CAC all you want, but in the end, it sounds like sour grapes from most and lunacy from a few. The major benefit of a CAC sticker is that it creates a stable sight unseen market. How many people advise not to buy coins sight unseen? Just about everyone. Now how many collectors purchase coins over the internet having only seen a photo? Almost all of us, and those coins are sight unseen. Purchasing a CAC stickered coin alleviates the need to have a third party examine your coins for quality at a major auction that you can't attend in person. Furthermore, a stable sight unseen market would help dealers just as much as it does the collectors because it will greatly improve liquidity of inventory. I have stated many times before that I see no need for the CAC for any coin valued under $500. But for rare coins with significant value, the cost associated with the CAC sticker is nominal and the benefits far outweigh the cost. So Drusus, you can call people like me suckers, lemmings, or anything else you want because of your hatred of the TPG's and the CAC. But that doesn't make you right. The simple fact is that the majority of collectors can't grade worth a damn and are dependent upon the TPG's. What is worse is the majority of collectors who think they can grade a coin also can't grade worth a damn. These collectors routinely bash the TPG's. I wonder, are you one of them?
Well I can certainly agree with that. Yet I feel the same way if you skip all ANAC's or ICG holdered coins.
