Hey, So got a couple rolls of new pennies from the bank and found this in one of the rolls. First one I’ve ever found. I’m also new to the hobby of collecting. Should I have it slabbed or do I need to go through somewhere else to have it verified that sort of thing. Any info would be great thanks
I'm no expert or professional but I'm thinking uncentered broadstrike. that little lip thing from noon to six on either face of the coin has me thinking partial collar. but since both sides are affected it can't be in collar at least not completely. All of the design is basically there, the L in liberty maybe slightly trimmed the U on the reverse in United maybe slightly stubby and missing the top serifs. Misaligned dies only affect one side because the coin is still in the collar. so one side strikes up centered on the anvil die and the hammer die doesn't. As far as offcenter strike or offcenter broadstrike this is out of my area by a long ways. I know it's whether details are missing or not as the determining factor. http://www.error-ref.com/broadstrike-uncentered/ I don't know how strict the rule is. these cents have basically no rim to begin with and 1 to 2mm of play tops to the edge of the coin. this is a tough one. can we get an edge view also? Is it "out of round" or not flat? I think offcenter strike is the likely answer, possibly a partial collar strike as to why it is a offcenter strike as opposed to a offcentered broadstrike.
What are you looking at or seeing a double strike or triple strike. As I'm new I'm not sure exactly what your seeing.
As far as getting it slabbed by a TPG, it's not that far offcenter, so unless you wanted it for yourself as a trophy, it likely wouldn't be worth the cost of the grading. small offcenters sell for $6-$10ish circulated, and maybe like $30 or so if uncirculated, but it would have to be TPG slabbed for that to fly with a buyer, pretty much negating the profits in the costs of the grading. These type of things, it is what it is, and pretty apparent to anyone looking to buy something like this. that it's in this category. it really doesn't need attribution from a TPG. HOWEVER I'd advise putting it in a coin capsule or 2x2 or flip or something to keep dust and fingers off of it so it will maintain it's color and condition.
Thanks Yeah I put it in a flip for now until my 2x2"s come in I ordered or if I decide to have it slabbed. Its definitely going into my collection.
Not double or triple, for things like this, wait for more than one person's opinion. Maybe @paddyman98 can chime in on this.
I was kind of overreacting just never seen one like this before and this is an extremely rare find for being found in a roll.

Looks like an uncentered broadstruck Cent. Nice one at that but not worth grading. Put it in a flip and keep it. Welcome to CT.
