So the local coin shop has done it again. Serenaded me inside, made me ask about bust half dollars... need i say more? But in all seriousness I have a question about the 1820. It appears to me to be an O-103. It also has a nice die crack on the lower obverse. My question is this, does the crack change the variety or is that considered a late die state of that particular variety?
I think it would be the same variety. The term “variety” is used loosely to denote just about any incongruity one can think of these days. Take these VAM varieties on the Morgan Dollars. I’d argue those are varieties only in the unskilled mind of VAMWorld. Should we agree on anything, it’s varieties are purposeful, for the most part, they’re intended. Fortunately these Overton folks had the skill-set enough to understand that well, and the distinction between errors. If that’s right, that crack is a later stage error, not a new variety.
What do you think about the 1826? Do you think it is a 112A? It looks like both die chips on the N and S are present. I'm still new to this researching these different dies.
