Should there be a tie after that, the person who responded the quickest will be declared the winner. The winners will be ranked as to how many questions were answered correctly. The 1st winner will get a choice of available prizes, after the 1st winner chooses, then the second winner gets to choose their prize and so on until no prizes remain. Oxjaw Congrats to every who picked the number 8!!!! Growing up in CT, I was a huge Red Sox fan. The Yaz was my hero. I remember my best friend who is still my best friend today, got to meet him. His grandfather was personal friends with Carl Yastrzemski and he arranged a meeting with him. Someone took their photo and sent it into the local paper. It was kind of a big deal. My baseball glove and bat were the Carl Yastrzemski signature editions and I played first base because of him. Years later, I would find another number 8 to cheer for.....Cal Ripken Jr. While I was in college, when I wasn't collecting coins, I spent a great deal of money and time putting together a complete collection of Cal Ripken, Jr. baseball cards. Do you have any idea how many cards this guy has???? Anyway, thats the story. Congrats again to everyone who picked 8. I know some off you were thinking about it, but decided for another number at the last minute. Sorry. Stay tuned for the questions....... Lets see how good you guys are....:kewl:
Woo-Hoo! I'm in! I knew you seemed like a Cal guy... must be that avatar of yours, while screaming, he is bald-ish as is Cal with his short tight white crew cut...
Please answer these questions and pm me your answers. And one other thing.... These are due by Thursday. Thanks. 1. Please give the exact date as to when the US government made it legal for you to buy, sell and hold all US and foreign gold coins. 2. What denomination is an eagle? 3. Please explain how the term "bourse" relates to numismatics. 4. What year was it made mandatory to include the motto "In God We Trust" on US coinage? 5. When someone refers to the "device" of a coin, what are they referring to? 6. What was the exact date that Congress enacted a law that said that changes to US coinage cannot be made more frequently than once every 25 years? 7. What is the difference between a proof set and a mint set? And explain what the term "Mint sealed Proof sets" mean. 8. Did you know that three out of the first 4 "real" people to appear on US coins were foreigners? Name these three people and the year and coins they were on. 9. Both matte proofs and sandblast proofs (also know as "satin" proofs) use a process of blasting the surface of the coin with fine sand particles to create their look, but one occurs before the coin is struck and the other occurs after. Which are they? 10. Was the US the first country to offer clad coinage of the "sandwhich" variety? And if not, what country was it? 11. Why was a clad composition, instead of pure nickel, chosen for the new, silver-less coinage? 12. What year did the mintmark first appear on US coinage and from what mint were they issued? 13. What do the 1905-S Coronet quarter eagle and the 1915-O Barber half dollar have in common? 14. What was the first coin to be issued by authority of the United States and when was it issued? 15. What was the first silver dollar size coin ever proposed for the United States?
:smileI did too, figuring most on the list advancing to this round would be stoked and immediately set off to work on answers...
Answers are good gang. Keep it up. Not hard questions, but do require a little bit of digging around. So here is what I am thinking after reading the first batch of answers. In order for the answers to be correct, they have to be vaguely close to the answers that I have. If they mention other stuff that is fine, but they at least have to mention what I have found, if not you get a big X. Also, if there appears to be a typo, I will give the person the benefit of the doubt and say the answer is correct. I found a few of these. At the very end of the contest, I will post all the answers that I have along with the questions. All these questions and answers came from a very reliable and respected source and I have no reason to doubt the validity of these, so at the end, there is no point to argue whether you were right or wrong. We will assume that you are wrong and move on. Good luck. PS - when answering questions with multiple answers, I will award fractions of points for each part right. For example, if there are three parts to a particular question, and you get only one part right, then you will have .33 of a point for that question. Two question right gives you .66 and all three will get you 100%. This may sound crazy, but this could be the difference between first and second place.
So eager to see what Thursday reveals now that it's Thursday... was there a cut off time today or does this run until midnight with answers technically on Friday?
Hey gang, I will not be home tonight. I just got called out to work. The quizzes are all graded. Nobody got all of the questions right, but the one question that everyone got wrong, I am throwing out, so that leaves one person with all the questions answered correctly!!! There were some answers that were answered very nicely, but did not contain wording that I was looking for so partial credit was given. Staying true to my word, I gave partial credit where it was deemed appropriate. So for those of you that didn't feel the need to send in the answers, you have one more day to do so. Good luck!
Thanks for the update Joe. Hope you don't have to work too hard. Looking forward to the results of the contest.
Just walked in the door. Too late tonight to post anything. I will post results tomorrow night. Tonight was crazy. It was so crazy, that you wouldn't believe me if I told you! I wasn't alone though, my partner got stuck with me. See you all tomorrow. :hail:
