Greetings all, I was searching some rolls today and found a few interesting coins, please let me know what you think and any thoughs on values would be great as well! Coin 1 is a 1984 with what a assume is a pretty big double strike, machine doubling, something like that... Although it only appears on the "IN GOD"... Coin 2 is a 1981 penny which appears to have and extra date stamped into Lincolns head I was checking it out cause it appeared to be a little machine doubled on the rim and didn't notice the extra date until I put it under the microscope. Any idea on how this happened and what it may be worth? Coin 3 is a 2008 Arizona quarter which I saw someone else on here mention which has an extra blob covering the initials just below the bottom of the cactus... Don't know if these are very common or not, but a nifty find! THANKS! J
I think the 1st one is die deteriation. 2nd coin, great find! The small cud seems to be more comman than the cud that goes into the date. I found a bunch of the sm cud in my first few rolls.
Yea, that 1981 is an awesome find. Anyone on here know how much one of these would be wort?. I have a 1995 penny that is similiar, and always wanted to know the value. Also, could you give us more pics of the quarter? I think I have one just like that and would want to confirm that.
Thanks for the responses everyone! I am really digging the 1981 As far as the quarter goes it seems that they are somewhat common from what I hear but would also be interested in learning more about it. Here are more pics of the quarter from about 20x zoom to about 200x - I love this dino-lite
Temporarily unemployed and have searched probably $4-$5K in change that I have been getting from various banks in the area At least $400+ in pennies alone considering that I have pulled out now $51 in 82 & prior copper pennies...
John, Congrats! The 1981 Cent is a really nice find! I would love to see a little more of the Obverse. With the extra Date some prevalent, there must be some other details hiding somewhere in the recesses! Frank
Wow!!! Thanks Frank!!! Sooooo I feel a bit silly, but I never even flipped the coin over after discovering the date on ol' Abe's forehead This coin is freakin sweet!!!! Any idea what it may be worth???
John, You can be silly because that is a nice Error coin in anyone's book! You actually have two errors on one coin...although the secondary is minor...it only boosts the already awesome error on the coin. What you have is a "Double Struck in Collar" Lincoln Cent that also has a minor mis-aligned Obverse Die or MAD. Now the mis-aligned Obverse Die means very little but by the coin being a "Double Struck in Collar" Error, it should fetch close to $150 or more. However, with the right (great) write-up and great pics, the coin could fetch quite a bit more on a good day, plus the MAD Error should only help boost it's potential value. It would be great if the coin was certified, graded and attributed by PCGS or NGC but the costs for the services would not be cost/return effective and due to being circulated and with some slight damage and corrosion or carbon spotting, they would probably return the coin bodybagged. Therefore, if you decide to sell the coin, then a really great write-up and great pics should go far in garnering the best possible price for the coin, making sure to note the MAD Error as well and that the second strike is about 110 degrees rotated! If you decide to offer the coin up for sale or auction, I would ask $150 to $200 for it but at auction, I would start it at $1.00 with at least a $125 Reserve Price. Now, I am sure that others have and will give their different opinions as to the value of the coin. So, don't go on my recommendation alone! You should rely on a concensus of opinions on the best way to sell the coin and what possible price that it will fetch, to minimize any costs that you will incur to sell it and maximize your' return. Good luck! Frank
THANKS FRANKS! You guys are a wealth of information! I didn't know if it was a crazy die clash or somthing but now I know! I would definitely love to get this coin certified but definitely don't wan't to waste money if it were to get BB'd. Although the coin is from circulation it does not appear to have any major post mint damage, just a few nicks here and there. I would guess from the rolls that I pulled this from that it may have been sitting in someones piggy bank for a while, plus with it being 28~ years old it is hard to believe that noone found it before me But I am soooo glad I did Is there any sure fire way to tell if the coin would grade or not? Also what it might grade? I have been trying to hone my grading skills but with this coin being less then 30 years old and circulated would take a guess at a VF30 or so? THANKS!! J
Half Disme, You are right! I forgot that fact. However, if it were my' coin, I sure would not want it to come back in a holder and labeled only "Genuine" 1981-P Lincoln Cent "Double Struck in Collar" which is what that might do. If John really wants to have the coin certified, graded and attributed, then I would go with ANACS. Frank
John, Yes, the coin would grade with ANACS! I would venture to say that the coin would grade at the least an EF-45 Brown but who knows, ANACS might say it is worthy of an AU-50 or better grade. Just a thought but if you decide to submit it, then the best thing to do, is to submit (I think it is) 10 or more coins (if you have others you want certified, graded and attributed if needed) at the same time. ANACS gives discounts for bulk submissions and you want to minimize as much as the costs per coin as possible. Frank
Thanks Frank, I have been trying to make a decision on what to do about grading some coins. I have 2 of the UHR Double Eagles which are damn near perfect and would love to send them in to NGC and see if they grade prooflike, so right now I am leaning towards going that route. But I also have a couple hundred of the new Lincoln error pennies, DDO1 and DDR1-3 and a bunch of die clashes I have been considering sending to ANACS since they are the only company attributing the DDRs from what I have seen. I just got my dino lite and haven't taken the time to look at all the 09 errors cause I am not very knowledgable as to what the differences between MS65+ coins. I would hate to spend several hundred bucks to send them all in so I just need to study some more. Out of curiosity, would any of the TPGs respond if I were to send in pics to get an opinion as to weather it would grade or just come back genuine? I guess what I am looking for is a set of standards or something. THANKS! J
John, I may be wrong but I don't think that they will answer any emails concerning whether a coin will grade or whether it is genuine...except when they (the coins) have already been submitted! If I am incorrect, hopefully someone will provide the correct information. Also, maybe some folks here on C.T. that have submitted coins and had them graded or not graded by NGC will advise you as to whether they believe that NGC will grade the coin or not. Frank
