A quarter shekel (1.70g) of Punic Spain, Carthagonova (Cartagena), ca. 237-209 BCE. Reverse is a Carthaginian elephant (though not outfitted for battle). The obverse depicts Melkart/Herakles with club over his shoulder. But...does it also depict Hannibal or one of the other Barcids? Some say so (though, oddly, not as many as the club-less portrait, which generally seems to have the same features to me, and to resemble the few known sculptures of Hannibal).

Good one, @shanxi ! I wouldn't have thought of that.

Here's another controversial one, albeit with some prominent supporters (like the Hannbal-Herakles above): Philip II of Macedon. Harlan J Berk, in his 100 Greatest Ancient Coins, proposes that several classical rulers' numismatic portraits appear concealed in busts of the divine (not, in principle, that surprising, since it was a common motif in classical art, albeit taboo on the coinage of some societies).

Of this coin, Berk (2008:50) writes that "it marks Philip II as the first Greek of the Hellenistic era to put his own portrait on a coin."
