What would you do?

What would you do in this situation. I reciently listed this auction that clearly shows rim dings on the coin in the picture. The guy recieved the coin and gave me a positive feedback.
Now he wants to return the coin 3 days after complaining of rim dings. I put in the auction that the bidder should examine the coin carefuly before bidding and even offered to answer questions. The problem is that I do have a return policy but, I think he may be adbusing it.

First off, with that much damage, at least one close up rim shot would be adviseable, BUT, from those pics, I can see what I'd be getting and the buyer's complaint regarding rim defects is probably someone who bid, won, paid, received, then looked up the value/grade with coin in hand, learned they too didn't want this coin and now want to take advantage of the standard return policy. You may want to return it to avoid a whiny buyer reporting you to eBay. I'd suggest in future, if you continue to allow returns, to do so with the caveat of not refunding return shipping costs and applying a 15% restocking fee to minimize these type of complaints and to make certain the buyer is serious about the return and willing to pay for those fees in return of merchandise.

 

Since it is within your return policy(7days), I see no way you can't do it. I do feel that for the condition, it is a reasonable or better deal, so maybe he found a different one in the last couple of days.

So what's not to see? The rim damage is clearly evident in the photos. Did the guy think the coin was going to improve with shipping?

 

Block him from bidding and then give him a refund. Just to be sure, do it in that order.

 

I shot him an email saying "doesn't the photos show the rim damage"
I will see what he does next.

 

I've dealt with a similar situation a few times on eBay myself your fortunate he left you positive feedback so you don't have to deal with him holding your good record (100% positive) hostage. But I agree with the others save yourself the aggravation have him return it and block him from future bidding.

 

block block block! it's the best part of e-bay as a seller to bad you can't block the idiots before they bid...

you need to get rid of that return policy it can only hurt you with the amount of nimrods buying on e-bay...

 

Doesn't sound Kosher to me....When I see that picture I turn away because I don't like damaged coins....I think that the buyer "changed his mind" he probably became more educated on the coin, he probably was one of the uneducated ebay buyers...Its really up to you....Either way he probably won't buy again from you, and he left positive feedback...eBay won't do anything...but here's the thing, will you loose sleep at night over this?

 

No question in my mind, let him return the coin. Bottom line: If I were selling coins, I would want the people buying them to be happy with them, even if that means a few returns in the process. Respectfully...Mike

 

Thats all part of conducting business. Now you have a return policy, Honor it. Further, it is within your discretion, whether or not you wish to do business with this buyer again. Don't forget, he/she pay's return S&H.
You also have the right to add a restocking fee, but that must be Clearly stated in your post.
Just a curious question. How many times have you had same scenario troubles with buyers on EBAY , say within the last 3 years?


Also, don't forget, that you can contact the next highest bidder, and inform them the coin is available , at their last bid. You may wind up selling it again.

Lastly, whatever you do, don't inflame the buyer with any "trash" talk. Simply agree to accept the fact, they are unsatisfied and act professional.

That's a shame but if I were in your shoes I would block him from ever bidding on your stuff again and give him a refund. Then when you repost you may want to add that the coin is slightly damaged due to minor rim damage. Some ppl are idiots and I think you may have run across one. ya think!!

an update on the situation,

I had emailed him asking if he looked at the picture that clearly shows dings.

This was his response

It was a bit deceptive on your part. The dings did somewhat show through the plastic, but not to worry on your part. After not hearing from you I decided to resell it on Ebay this weekend and made a small profit.

The reason I did not get back to him so soon was because
1. I had no auctions going and everyone had left positive feedback.
2. Was away from my computer.

 

Ok , next! You should just check to see when he posted the coin for sale on ebay. oh well, this is the cost of doing business.Don't sweat it.
