Let me check my book - even before that it looks tooled.

Well that was easy - none of the ones in the book have the first star that high on the hair. Plus E in Liberty does not line. So I feel pretty sure it is a fake.

Also, look at the pic of the edge and see if you see what I see? ;)

    Ribbit :D

    Two things jump out :

    1) A reeded edge. I thought these coins had a lettered edge HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT.

    2) The fingerprints of the culprit !

I wish I had noticed the pic of the edge prior to wasting 30 minutes attributing it. :goofer:

I did not even make it that far in the pictures - I only needed the obverse. :)

I had just finished attributing a 1799 (BB-163), which was tough, and I didn't even take the time to look at the coin, I just pulled up each variety on Heritage and once I had looked at all of them, that's when I noticed all the problems. :goofer:

Oh well! :D It never hurts to spend time attributing a coin, it only makes you better at doing it. :thumb: And I figured this would be a good one to show other CT members so they don't end up spending a lot of money on a round piece of silver looking metal. ;)

    Ribbit :)

I told the seller it was fake here was the response -

"I DON T NO,SORRY.NEVERTHELESS I DON T WRITE REPLICA OR COPY IN THIS COIN".

I guess I will go report it.

I asked about the edge pic and I got the first part of your response:

    "I DON T NO,SORRY"

Reminds me of a Bot answer. :goofer:

Feel free to report this! :thumb: It's obvious someone is getting fleeced, with the current bid as high as it is.

    Ribbit :)

I didn't get the chance to view it. It has already been pulled....

Listing removed - HT, thanks for pointing it out. I reported it, and thanks to those who did the same.

How long before a fake is so good that it is actually considered to be a new variety?

That's an important topic - worthy of its own thread !

The EAC guys put it another way... due to the wash of fakes, if a purported discovery coin shows up, it undergoes even more scrutiny than ever. Even though fake Large Cents aren't that good. Yet....

here was that altered Gallery Mint 1793 cap that had us going for a little while. Was first thought to be a new example of S-15 and then when that was disproven it was thought (briefly) to be a new variety. The Gallery Mint copies were pretty good. Better than the stuff from China.

And the deception might not have been caught for a long time if the Gallery Mint had decided to make their 93 cap look like S-13 instead of S-15.
