I miss posts so if this is a repeat, I apologize. FYI. H.R.1923 - 116th Congress (2019-2020): Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 | Congress.gov | Library of Congress Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 signed by president (coinworld.com) Here are two links to this act. One is brief from the government and the other in more length from a Coin World Article. What are your thoughts on how this might roll out for circulating coins?
I like it. Being primarily a CRH kinda guy, I like to see new and interesting designs. Canada has a lot of interesting designs on their coinage and it makes it fun and interesting to collect. Not to mention collecting of new designs (think state quarters) brings a lot of new collectors to the hobby. I'm personally disappointed that the W quarter issues have stopped. I enjoyed collecting and looking for those. Without something new to look for , CRH gets boring.
I am done collecting US quarters. Think about how many you have to buy, and at a premium for most, for just one year. Circulation Grade (S Mint anyway), Uncirculated, Proof and, usually, reverse proof, plus any other configurations they come up with. That's a bunch of quarters, most sold at a premium. Not me, I'm done with them.
In terms of numismatics that bill is an absolute disaster aside from the anniversary year. There's going to be a lot of duds and congrats to the mint employees who will have a reduced work load until that bill is finished.
I'm about done with quarters. Enough. I'm absolutely done with the innovation dollars. I started, realized my own mortality and said "nahhh, ain't nobody got time for that anymore!"
I have one Innovation dollar, the first. I quit President and Native American a long time ago. I won't get quarters anymore. The premium is too high.
just after 2 full series on quarters, I've had enough. if they want to do a program, do it on the $20 bill or something. LOL, just kidding, I'm sure with all the design changes, it would become a counterfeiters dream. the only coin they haven't screwed with in a long time is the dime. I'd be game for that if they could manage to pull it off on such a small scale. I still won't be collecting except from circulation though, or what comes in mint or proof sets with the annual coins. I'd have continued the innovation dollars had it not been for the price increase. It's just not worth it now to spend the money for the next.... 9 years I guess or so.
All these junk coins will eventually go the way of the Beanie Babies. For every one "gold dollar" in circulation and collections there are thousands in the Fed vaults. I'm with you @John Burgess. No return on investment with mint junk releases.
AU and MS Washington's command a higher than average price. We have several complete sets and have moved on to other denominations. Coin prices, overall, are rising in price and condition. We use caution and advise you do the same. Good luck
I quit collecting US Stamps in 2001. They were making too much wallpaper. Cost a bunch to keep up. The US Mint has started down the same track. The big difference between the two is the premium. The USPS doesn't charge a premium. They don't need to. Their product gets sold at face value and the USPS doesn't have to perform any service for what they charged. In a few years the stamps lose most of their value. They end up being sold for 50 cents on the dollar. Or, used as postage on large envelopes. The US Mint premium serves the same purpose. Make a profit on some and put the rest in a vault. Coins are not worth more than face value after the excitement wears off.
I "sort of" collected uncirculated stamps up until about 20+ years ago. The ones I bought I use for... postage. People gripe about coin collecting becoming less popular, when is the last time you have heard of a stamp show or seen a stamp dealer?
The books below are #1 1847 to 1975, #2 1976 to 1995, #3 1995 to when I quit i 2002. Look at the thickness from era to era.
I'm surprised the U.S. Mint doesn't do something this year with the FDR dime. 75 years ago, first FDR dime was minted. The Mint apparently forgot the 50th anniversary (1996), so hopefully they will do something this year. Considering what they did for the JFK half dollar for the 50th anniversary, you'd think they might consider the 75th for FDR. A one-year change, and then an updated reverse thereafter (ala Lincoln cents and the Washington quarters). Just wondering.
Personally, I am so over the quarter redesign. Sooooo many quarters are had for a collection every year that I refuse to drink the Kool-Aid after ATB series. Same goes for the dollars. Once 2021 is over, I am going to refocus on more classic series.
Pardon my ignorance (I don't collect stamps), but do those binders contain all the stamps issued by the USPS for the years indicated? If so, wow!!! What a collection you've got.
