Could it be a long cud?

Indentation. It's below the lettering. So more than likely it happened before the Mint meaning. There was a problem with the planchet. I think I just answered my question myself lol.

I had something similar recent. Thats why I'm thinking planchet error/flaw of something in that area.

The first Nickel posted (In God)....Their is a groove that runs below those words. You don't see Nothing? or You don't see anything worth mentioning? The rim of the coin. Just thought maybe it was something. Apparently not. lol

In the third photo posted, there's what looks like a scratch beneath "IN GOD." But oddly, those letters are not affected, as they would've been for PMD. It appears that the groove is below those letters. That's what the OP is questioning and I'm curious too.

How on earth did I miss that. I think it must be the result of a flawed planchet. Any master hub produced with this condition would surely have been caught.

Too bad the Nickel is trashed out! Small Lamination. 20210223_180552.jpg 20210223_180603.jpg 20210223_180616.jpg

I've never seen a satisfactory answer for the groove under the outer devices. Given how much material is flowing at the point of coining, it is in my opinion, not related to the planchet (i.e., it would fill in during the strike). Given that this phenomenon happens very close to the edge making me suspect that a collar is involved. Perhaps @Fred Weinberg can suggest what is happening here. I have seen this a few times with cents and nickels over various CRH events, so it happens often enough I suppose.

I have a few of these. It is definitely damage caused to the planchet prior to the strike. Some sort of collar strike error before the dies get to it. But like Kevin stated I too have never read or heard a response that would give me a definite answer.

That's the fun of CRH. You never know what you will find!
