Pratt's design is amazing, even 100 years later. I believe I read somewhere he was a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Nice 1912 $2.5 and 1908 $5.

I love that $10 dollar gold indian!! I was at a coin shop today in Elk Grove and the guy there showed me a ring that he had just bought and it had one of those $10 gold pieces on it. It was awsome!! I never knew that coin was sooo big until I tried on that ring.lol Incidentally, he didn't even price it yet b/c he said that he has to wait 30 days, before he can sell it. I know that it would be a bit too high for my money anyways, but it's still alright to dream in my book. Oh, it fit perfectly!!

 

Fret, old buddy, you might want to pass on that coin if it's been soldered into a ring....:smile

 

That's a nice coin, Johnny. I'm not sayin' that just to be nice. 1912 is known for some lack-luster $2.5s.

Hard to tell from a photo, but it looks lightly circulated - a very solid AU58. Good detail on the eagle's shoulder, exceptional for a circulated $2.5. Lacking a little detail in the lowest feather of the war bonnet, but the obverse fields are nice - particularly for a 1912 (known for mint-made abrasions).

thanks 900fine. It was pulled from a PCGS AU-55 slab. What really drew me to this coin was the color...it's gorgeous blazing apricot orange that makes it stand out among my other coins. The $5 indian was an ANACS AU-58, and I really like the luster and obverse strike on that one.

 

French Angel Gold Coin

The 20 Franc Gold Angel.
The Angel design first appeared on the 1 Louis D'Or in 1792. The designer of that coin, Augustine Dupre, was sentenced to lose his head on the guillotine during the French Revolution. According to legend, however, Dupre was able to bribe his guard with the Angel coin he carried in his pocked and make his escape. Legend also says that Napoleon Bonaparte always carried an early French Angel in his pocket... until losing it the night before the fateful Battle at Waterloo. This Battle marked the beginning of his downfall.

Yes it does look brassy in one of the pictures,but it's the camera or the lighting,90%+ gold ,you can find a nice on for under a $100(that was what I paid 2 years )maybe up a little now.ago.

Love these Indians,intended to be used on the obverse of the $20 Double,a few pattern examples are @ the Smithsonian Museum.The reverse was to be similar to the Flying eagle on the present coin.
