If I were to set up a more developed marketplace here at CoinTalk, what would you prefer, a classified section, an auction listing section, both?

The advertising forums are getting more and more action, and I'd like to encourage more transacting among members and to facilitate that I've been researching options and want to get some input from all of you before getting into the heavy lifting.

Comments are welcome, or just let your opinion be known by voting in the poll.

I know that I would take most of my EBay sales and list these items here if there were an auction and an classified section.

I'd say anything to do away with Ebay is a plus! :thumb: I also think a small one-time fee would be doable. ;) Whether it be per listing or a yearly membership type fee. :hammer:

Matt and Toadie made excellent comments, and I agree with both. I haven't listed on ebay lately due to policies, but having both auctions and classified would be great. I would hope the "bumping" by the author to keep an ad on top of the list would be limited. I think a fee should be asked as donation to the site. Could be based on whether sold or not. I personally feel at least 1% of selling value contributed would be fair. I would be agreeable to even asking an extra 1% or more to go separately to a benevolent fund for the many causes that have been supported on the forum.

    Thanks for the thought Peter!

Definitely would enjoy listing and buying here instead of on eBay.

I have not sold anything on eBay, but an opportunity to sell odds and ends here on CoinTalk would appeal to me very much. Either format would suit my needs.

I can see good and bad for both ideas - I agree 100% that there should be some type of fee for either the whole thing, or maybe for add on's. Such as, extra pic's are $.50, etc. That would help out from the extra room that would be needed on the server, and also just to help keep CT up and running!

Here, here....I'll 2nd that. Much more fun buying from my brothers and sisters here at CT. I've never received a 'lemon' from the members that I've purchased from.

For someone like myself who has little knowledge of grading or values, it would be helpful to upload photos of coins and have offers made for them( could then choose whether to accept highest offer) rather than auctioning or posting a classified ad...... I could then rely on the knowledge of others to sell them. Does that make sense?
    Best wishes, Mike.

Now I would be only too happy to buy from guy's here on the site as long as they would ship outside of the USA and take paypal :D

Okeh, I will be contrarian here and say why there should not be an ebay type auction here,
Recently one member bounced a check to another member, that sort of thing makes one hesitant to join in.
Secondly, the buyer seller relationship tends to make the subject of grading even more subjective.
Thirdly the market would draw a lot of predators.
But on the other hand, the knowledge of the participants would tend to make frauds less likely, The moderators could control and weed out the bad apples.
So I would tend to be more for it,than against it.

Coin Talk is a great place to come and listen in or participate in discussion and debate over just about anything numismatic. We have an open forum where individuals may post something numismatic related to buy, sell, or trade.

This makes Coin Talk much like the old B&M shops you used to be able to go into and sit and chat coins, discuss off the wall things, and periodically place something on or buy something off the bid board. These B&M places existed decades ago, and as a YN back then, it was quite an encouraging experience.

I do not personally believe Coin Talk needs to in any way upgrade or add to any BST experience that we already have here. If you want off eBay, simply peruse the open forum we already have, and interact with the members. Or use one of the many smaller sites popping up in response to eBay's inadequacies.

I have lurked Coin Talk long before I even joined as a member, and Coin Talk has always been about community. Introducing something more commercial like "eBay style" auctioning systems, "Craigslist style" classifieds, and bells and whistles, simply moves away from the "community" feel, in my opinion.

Yes, there are good aspects, as it is something that people desire, but does it really belong here at Coin Talk? Is Coin Talk the place to come and BST in easy auction format, sending your monthly or periodic payments to Peter to keep it all running like clockwork? Is it the place you can go to BST knowing that there is an army of numismatic professionals and numismatic cops to keep everything in line and on the up and up, so that we may all BST without fear or need to do our own homework and educate ourselves? Or is it a place of community with a common interest where we can come together and discuss what we enjoy...coins?

Something to think about. Changes change things.

Peter could always give it a shot and if too many problems arise, it's easy to go back to how it is now. ;)

    Ribbit :)

Ps: Peter may even post a Sticky that explains the new section(s) are on a trial basis to see if it works and to establish the rules. :D

    I voted no change.

I don't think there is really anything that needs to be changed.

However, I do think that the 1 posting per week rule could be done with :)

The only problem is that once a reputation has been tarnished, it is much harder to fix it.

I am not sure how to vote - I like the idea of auctions, but I can't imagine what it would be like. What would it draw? And how would you keep the likes of SGS coins out? What kind of legal ramifications? I like the open forum and people can just list coins there. Maybe a second site that you have to opt into for it. How would it be moderated? Lot of things to think about. I think I will just vote "no change".

In addition to what Mark_h said, consider that CoinCommunity forum, PCGS forum, all have BST boards (of which a number of us are also members of).
There are also sites like CoinBug and Coinzip.

So honestly, aside from already having voted and posting, I would have to say "don't worry about it" - it seems like it would be more trouble than it's worth.

If coins are sold here, I will buy here. I do most of my buying through the internet [but not Ebay]. I can always use another expert source.

Good points about possible problems. I agree with Magman about changing the 1 post per week. About the grading problem, could just use photos and no grading mention, except for certain TPGs ( yeah sorry, like ebay :( ), and although new members might not like it, maybe raise the participation level to 100 posts, might limit a few scammers.

Sorry Peter, you know what you get when you ask a committee :goofer:
