Because of the very poor strike and over used dies I'll give it the benefit of the doubt that it's uncirculated but, the highest grade I can give it is MS 62. Even if it was actually an MS 65 coin I wouldn't pay anywhere near 65 money for it.
I'm, caught between AU and MS. No complete steps, worn reverse, good luster. I like the coin, good luck.
Of course, if PCGS still only requires 5 full steps (NGC requires 6...right?...or has that changed...?) it might...just might...make it on a bad grading day, but to me it's a NO for FS.
For what it's worth I'm kind of a Morgan Dude also. On this, yours is a popular opinion among many comments, but shouldn't the weak strike issues factor into the grade...? I went with 58 first...then 60-62. We'll see.
It was. Had it been well-struck, it would have been in the 66 range, based on surface preservation, and dye appeal.
@Mac McDonald, MS60-62 are dogs. You're saying, if it's not an AU58, it's a dog? AU58 is the highest circulated grade, while MS60-62 are the lowest uncirculated grades. Circulated and uncirculated are two distinct grading tiers based on the existence or nonexistence of wear. You mean if it's not an AU58, it's an MS64-65. Think about it...
If it were in hand and I could see it better it might get a different grade. I'll stick it at MS62 Stay Safe Semper Fi
PCGS FS = 5 Full Steps NGC 5FS = 5 Full Steps NGC 6FS = 6 Full Steps In the early days, NGC only recognized coins with 6 full steps. In 2003, they changed that and created the 5FS & 6FS designations. Prior to 2003, they used FS like PCGS. If you see an NGC Jefferson with just the FS designation, it means: NGC FS = 6 Full Steps
Everyone is guessing very high, which I don't quite understand. Even for a weak strike, the reverse looks very worn to me. I only chose 58 because it was the lowest and I didn't think "Other" would be right (requires and explanation).
^ I see planchet marks that weren't struck out (the weak strike), but I see very clean fields and what appears to be luster (albeit not booming) everywhere. That's why I went with the 66 earlier. Those that see this as worn/circulated have me baffled.
I'll say 65. Decent strike, but not FS, luster compromised a bit by toning, dies are shot. A few marks that make 66 a no-go.
I went a little lower 64 I thought it was 65 only because it probably got a toning boost or it looks better in hand this one was tricky not the best strike
