So I have this 1957 proof set and the coins are really nice, but the cello/mylar is beat up and there is no original envelope. Should I break it up and put the coins in airtites or do I leave it as is or do I pay another $2-3 to buy an envelope for it on ebay? Thanks.
If it were me, I'd open it, and if any of them would grade high(enough to make a profit or worth keeping) I'd get them graded. I would open it, see what the coin really look like, and if none would grade to where they are top pop, or near it, or anywhere where you could make money, just put them in airtites, or whatever you use
I would just use any old envelope, wouldn't buy one!! I collect coins, not envelopes I think the value is in the coins in this case and having the original packaging adds nothing. Too common of a set.
I prefer the original packaging myself, I would ask around, maybe someone has broken up a set and still has the original envelop.
I'd probably keep it original. However, proof sets look really nice in capital holders. I know because my dad dropped one of my proof sets and the plastic broke. So a generous cointalker sent me on of those capital holders, and the set looks beautifull in it. So thats another option.
