Sad Situation Indeed!

This message is presented to our Coin Talk Community to advise them of an unresolved financial situation which has negatively impacted my personal finances. After several attempts to obtain a reply and a proposed resolution in this matter, the member has as of this date ignored me. harkenkc please contact me.

Wow. Having become virtually involved I'm still thinking Mr Mustard with the candlestick, but in the library.

Now if we can get the involved parties to resurrect Gen. Patton and they all go to N. Korea together perhaps, using these tactics, there may be peace somewhere.

Having looked at the malice here I'm totally unconvinced. Unfortunate, yes. Damage done, yes.

The way it has been approached, YES.

Although ignorance is no excuse for the law there is still contact due.....at least communication/explanation & then compensation.

 

Sorry to hear of your misfortune on a forum venue, coinman. About 10 or 11 years ago, I had a similar experience but it involved trading about $100 worth of premium sport cards on a trading forum where I initially got stiffed. I still own around 300 thousand cards but am no longer active.. Here's basically what happened. In the end it all worked out.

1. Agreed on a trade via email after contact on forum.
2. I mailed off but never received.:crying:encil:
3. Contacted forum owner, after a month, whom I knew well as I was one of the original charter members way before it became a pay to play site.
4. Was told by the forum owner that he had received as many as 6 complaints about this guy just in the last week and would post him as a bad trader and delete him from the membership rolls.
5. All anyone had on him was name/address. .. six of us.:headbang: Finally after much investigation, I found his phone number(out of state) and called him.
6. Turns out his computer went dead with all the details of trades, contacts info, etc. was lost. I know... I know... he, at the very least could have written letters to everyone from return addresses on their packages/letters. I guess he was lazy. Anyways, I contacted everyone involved and after many phone calls to this guy, I was able to moderate a settlement for everyone involved even though the phone process was slow and dragged on for two months.:hail:

I hope in the end, he makes good to you, coinman, for his shortcomings. No matter what though, in my book, even if he does, he's guilty of poor communication with you.

Sometimes we just don't know everyone's situation.... I do hope it all works out for you....

I ran into a lesser situation

I was going to sell some bulk coins to a member some time back when I caught him in a lie as to what state he came from.This would have increased my costs for shipping appreciably.It wasn't the money but the principle.I expect someone to be upfront with me in my dealings, particularly in coin talk.I sent him a memo on integrity and he couldn't (or refused to)understand why I stopped the deal cold.I choose not to name the party BUT if I was ripped off I would have brought it to PETER'S attention.

There are enough good folks here to make up for the few that have developed negative behavior patterns that to do otherwise even in the smallest affairs is against their instinct. This issue was brought to CT and I was guided by long time members and moderators and forum friends. Thanks for you sharing and input.

I do buy coins from forum members when they have something I want. I usually pay with a Postal Money Order. When they recieve it they go to the Post Office cash the money order and send out the item. This has worked really well and the sellers don't seem to mind. Tim

ok. I don't have time to read this whole HUGE thread. But that sucks that someone got ripped off. I've been out of town, so my question is: Was the guilty party ever named? And if not, I think he/she should be, so they don't have the opportunity to rip off me or anyone else here.

If it was me, I would pick up the phone and call the guy. If he hangs up then have that DA sent the note!
I don't know what the law is in your state, but the ammount is too low for you to spend much time on it. Passing a bad check might help your chances though.

A letter from my attorney will be sent, probably within the week. I have no intention of providing him an opportunity to hang a phone up in my ear. He has my contact information and it is his responsibility to do the right thing.
However, I am certain your suggestion was well intended. Even If I had reached him by phone, i'd probably only get a verbal promise to correct the situation at best. He will either make right his wrong on his own volition or by whatever means the law allows me.

I always used to use postal money orders when buying on line, I figured that the seller could clear that faster than a personal check, plus my wife has the checkbook, and only lets me see it at a distance. Knowing people though I bet there is not any method of payment that has not been scammed by people.

 

There was a situation here recently in which I was close to outing somebody who is a member here.

He had purchased a coin from me on layaway. He regularly paid by the week, and when he hit the halfway point, I mailed him the coin.

Then, he dropped off the map. No contact, no returm messages ect ect.

I emailed Peter and had him intervene before I " went public " with this scammer.

It turns out the member had a medical emergency with his family, and relayed this to peter. Why he did not respond to me is still a question I have but I do accept it.

I was SOOOOOOOO glad I did not embarras myself and this popular member, and kept it behind the scenes. After hearing thru Peter of the situation, I called the deal good. Done. Keep it, your problems are way bigger than mine, my friend. When things improve, I will welcome you back with open arms and a smile. Family first.

 

And the drama continues! this is like watching "days of our lives" the only difference is I only have to wait for hours for plot changes, not years!!!!:loud:

 

I really can understand the sense of dissapointment Coinman must feel. I too fell victim to a similar ploy by a person who, as it seems, was a member of C.T.

In my case it was > $400 for a coin won on Ebay, and which was never shipped. No answers to many e-mails, and a PayPal 'investigation' also brought no resolution. More than the money what hurt is a feeling of sadness as to what lengths, and what depths, some people will sink to.
