And I have won 7 auctions this year - probably a couple hundred dollars. So I am doing my part to support ebay.
Sure, you can have a seller list items for sale even if there aren't any buyers. But nothing will sell (and sellers will disappear), so no fees will be earned, and for all practical purposes, you wont have any sellers. Charging the buyers a commission wouldn't change things much at all. Most buyers factor the buyer's premium into their maximum bids. So if there is a buyer's premium, bids will be reduced accordingly. Thus the sellers will pay less commission, but on lower prices realized and end up no better off than they are now.
It is interesting to me how many people seem to think that business models must be modified as they would like. It was this way on the thread about TPGs paying off on fake coins that they slabbed under conditions different from the TPGs stated policy. Now people seem to want ebay to reduce fees or change their policies which seem to be very successful as far as the company is concerned. In both of these threads mentioned, some posters basically said "if you don't like the rules, then don't play", and many were not happy with that. Sorry, get real, the world and big businesses makes the rules. If you think ebay's fees are high, consider the large auction houses and their business plans. So many feel they were taken or robbed, or on the other hand they ripped someone or stole. They are not going to change, so either learn to work with the plan, or bail out. IMO. Shouting out here may make a person feel more empowered, but it won't change anything! Jim
I don't have a single problem with eBay. First if you sell something for $100 with $5.00 shipping the ebay fee would be $4.97 + the $3.35 paypal fee. That is if you started the auction at $0.99. The ebay fee would raise to $9.35 for Buy-It-Now auction. I have been selling on eBay for over 2 years. Have you ever tried to sell a coin to a dealer or even just by sending it to a auction house. You are going to pay more than the 8.75%-12% fee on eBay. When you send the coin to an auction house you are going to be charged a 20% fee. There is a 5% fee for the auction house plus the shipping fee to get the coin there plus there is a buyers premium of 15% so most time the buyer takes this fee into account when bidding. I have been paying over $600 a month in ebay fees and don't mind it what so ever. I am also a power seller so I get a 20% discount on my ebay fees when the invoice comes. eBay is the best part-time job I have ever had. If you don't like eBay than don't use it!! I do think the seller not being able to leave negative feedback is stupid, but I also thought it was stupid that I could sell something and the buyer would not pay but would still leave negative feedback. Ebay was doing this to protect the buyer, buyers were afraid to leave negative feedback because they didn't want to get negative feedback in retaliation.
I'm thinking this is the coin he is referring to: (the only FSB MS67 PCGS on the bay at the moment) Cert checks out OK http://cgi.ebay.com/PCGS-MS-67-FSB-...trkparms=65:12|66:2|39:1|72:1240|293:1|294:50
I agree with this Krispy. I have just started selling on eBay but Paypal tracks the info well and most of my coins I have not owned long enough to profit significantly though I have on several items here and there. I mostly sell to pay for upgrades and accept I may probably will sell at a loss. At least coins have no lost like Wall Street. Once bought from a buyer that only accepted MO, cash or check. I found it very annoying. It took forever to get the coins (3 weeks or so). Just MHO's
This is very well said, as well as Schatzy's point. Ebay is cheaper than other options and generally a good system to me, with flaws like any other business I guess.
schatzy and boss, I totally agree with you guys and especially schatzy for pointing out the fees of auction houses and dealers... Thanks for the experience/examples to illustrate this point!
No problem Krispy, We all have different situations and having read further big auction houses charge hefty premiums. I knew this as we sometimes use them at work but the audience involved is looking for high dollar quality stuff. In short it depends on what you sell and how you sell it. I can always get my boss to "broker" a coin for me. A luxury few have and I know that. Ebay in general has become a pathetic monster to a lot of big sellers. I have a cousin that is a BIG TIME seller on ebay (not coins) but he sells millions in merchandise every year and a lot of it on ebay. He "sweeps" his Paypal account every night to avoid bogus claims. What should that tell anyone? These are people ebay does NOT want to lose due to their greed and stupidity. Yet, they still do it. He took a few weeks off of selling this year to try and collect funds from non paying bidders. This cost him time an money. I do digress here though. Ebay has it's place. It fits better for some than others BUT when ebay really starts to alienate big and legitimate sellers they're digging their own grave. I've heard enough ebay "horror stories" and many involve Paypal. Scary thing is that now that I am in a coin shop I hear them but on a larger scale. Does ebay want to alienate everyone but the scammers? Seems they're working on it.
A great point as we do sell on ebay at the shop. I just don't personally. We make it VERY clear that a slabbed coin is just that. Guess it boils down to you're buying the plastic. Cruel but true. Buy it and it's yours period. We're honest about it and point out things we may disagree with. NOW, if you disagree with the TPG good luck is all I can say. If it's raw it's a different matter. Although we don't doctor photos we are NOT professional photographers. Returns are accepted and the terms laid out in every auction. This has never been a problem. Do we get Paypal money in the account pronto? Of course, we sent a coin to Germany immediatley after receiving funds then the buyer claimed he never received it. Paypal was SO helpful. Basically told us to prove other wise. End result was we lost about $500 and if you buy outside the U.S. you pay some hefty shipping as it won't happen again. Paypal funds arrived immediately and they took them back faster. Ebay and Paypal made money. Funny how that works isn't it?
I too sold on eBay for 6 years and gave it up 9 months ago for all the reasons noted, had a 100% feedback rating and still do CEOGBOSE but decided to take things into my own hands and develop an auction site with all the same features as eBay without all the BS. It's simple like eBay was in the beginning Sellers get the same respect as buyers and feedback goes for both buyers and sellers. All honest disgruntled eBay sellers welcome there's no listing or reserve fees ever. www.CoinSpace.org
He transfers the money to a different account not tied in with Paypal. Paypal can't automatically take what isn't there.
I do the same thing. I transfer the money to another checking account that isn't linked to paypal so paypal cant take the funds out of that account. I once had $3,250 in my paypal account and I had a buyer claim that he didn't get a coin (the coin price was $80) and paypal froze my account. I couldn't even print shipping labels with taking the money out of my credit card. It took 2 weeks from paypal to release the funds and don't worry the buyer got the coin (usps lost it and later found it!!) Any time I get over $500 in my paypal account I transfer the funds!!
