New to coin collecting. Really enjoyed the thread about Roosevelt dimes. Wondering what you guys collect and why and what you look for. Trying to decide what would be fun to get addicted to.

The only thing that can get you addicted is what YOU like, you won't know what to collect if you just here what we collect, it shouldn't influence you on what you want to collect ;)

P.S. I collect morgan dollars and indian head quarter eagles, and I am also working on a tytype set, so I can have on of everything ;)

Makes sense. I'm working on a type collection right now. But just dont know what people look for when collecting a specific coin. What do you look for in morgan dollars? or do you just try and own as many as possible?

I collect all types of US coins. Just pick up whatever I see that I like and go from there. This keeps me from getting bored with one series and also allows me to have a sampling of just about everything.

Well I was collecting them at MS63-64, but I am going to sell them off to get them in MS65-MS66+. In morgans that high of a grade these are some of the differences:
In MS63-64 it is pretty much the same things you look for, there is chatter on the face, and some marks in the fields. In any uncirculated grade, there should be no wear on the coin. In MS64, there is less chatter on the face. When you get to MS65-66, there is virtually no chatter on the face, and little marks on the fields, and of course no wear. It just depends on what you collect, other people might collect toned morgans, like one of our members here, Lehigh96 is a major toned coin collector, he has a lot of MS63-67 morgans, that are amazingly toned, obviously he looks for what I said above, only as a bonus, that they are toned.
I think in any collection, you try to own as many as possible, but just not a bunch of duplicates, trying to finish the collection in the nicest grade possible, that is the real challenge.

I mainly collect wheat pennies. The reason(s) are as follows.

1.When I was 6 or 7, I was introduced to coin collecting by my (now late) grandmother giving me a large cottage cheese container full of wheat cents that she had collected over the years. I still have these coins separated into a special part of my collection and hope to pass those along to my daughter when she is older.

    2. I think that the wheat design is one of the most beautiful designs there was.

    3. For most of the coins, they are reasonably valued.

    4. They can still be found today by searching bank rolls and also sometimes in change.

    5. I love the look of a natural toned wheat

Very interesting thanks for the post. Do tones come naturally? How do i tell if its a tone or just ware?

Cool. Thanks for the reply. Do you collect just as many as possible or do you look for only really high grade ones?

There is natural toning, and artificial toning.
I am not an expert on toned coins, so I cannot help you here, but somebody who does know their stuff, when it comes to toning will come along ;)

I consider myself the first generalist since the great pyramids were built. Unfortunately I'm self trained, of necessity, so I don't know much of anything. This is probably why I collect everything from ancients to telephone tokens. Many collections I started just because the items were available and some because no one else was. Some were just to have something to look for in the junk boxes or so I could always be the only one looking. It's easy to be Johnny on the spot when you have no competition.

It was probably this last one that got me hooked on clad. I was already investing in clad as early as 1972 but I held it at arms lenght in those days so as not to get any on me. In the late '70's I sorely wanted to collect gems but everything else was getting big premiums and you had to fight the crowds for them.

Now days I do specialize a little bit but this might be more just a recognition that you can't call a collection with no specimens a collection. ;)

And I hate to say it, but either start with moderately priced coins or a series that is not going to cost a fortune. You can cut your teeth, bounce off the ropes a couple of times and still not get too bloodied up financially.

I'm probably one of the most hated on type of collectors out there. I collect for the investment of it. I thoroughly enjoy learning how to make a profit out of what many people say is a terrible thing to invest in. I am getting better at it too. It took a few years of me testing the waters and seeing where my place was, but I have found it. I buy only from the mint, and as high quality counterfeiting is becoming more and more common these days, I just stick to the mint, and if I come across a coin I like, I just order it and keep it to look at.

I sometimes will buy a 5000 ct bag for wheats from a trusted dealer. I also will buy cent rolls from the bank and find a few wheats in there.

Occasionally I will buy single coins but, not that often.
