So I have enjoyed collecting Mercury Dimes, Standing Liberty quarters and Walkers for quite awhile, but lately I am really getting into Bust Halves for their fantastic classic design and toning. No way I would ever complete a set but they are interesting to collect as a diversion, although it may be more so. Any thoughts, anyone into collecting bust halves?
I love Bust Halves and was collecting them slowly quite a while ago, but as the prices got higher for better quality examples, I had to bow out. I agree with you about the wonderful design.
I love them. Problem free examples look good even in lower grades. Then you have the fact that each die was hand worked, no two are the same, which gives plenty of room for study.
Great area to collect. Be really picky. Plenty to pick from. There were some great threads on this site but many of the images are lost now.
Bust Halves are great! A beautiful design so I have a number of them. I buy them whenever I can but they are getting expensive. Have fun and enjoy them.
I'm thinking you had great timing. You were collecting these way before the pricing went crazy. Way back I was just buying lower grade Bust, Fine or maybe VF. Wish I had been buying AU or better. Wish I could get deeper into Draped Bust but I would need a third job.
welcome to collecting CBH's. I started a date set a few years ago aiming for fine/vf coins, but picked up a handful of xf-au along the way. finished the set about a year ago but am looking for some coins with a better "look" (not necessarily a higher grade). The variety of toning is wide and the design changed over time, too. I like the blundered dates and die clashes and cracks, too. Have fun!
Nothing to say but with the way the links are right now, the only way to see the photos is to hit reply!
I am doing a set now. I'm about 10 deep. I'm trying to stay in the F- VF range. They've been pretty fun to do. You can drive yourself nuts before you settle. I already duplicated the 1813 because I just had to have both. Pretty sure it's gonna happen again. Just totally exhausted myself on the 1812 as well...but finally chose 1.
I "completed" my date set (minus the 1815/2) last year. I'm always looking for new die marriages, though. I had to get a couple duplicates for my dansco 7070 set, too, because I couldn't have gaps in my CBH year set.
