We lost a lot of images on this site.

Looking back on several long threads, many images are gone. It has something to do with CT going down a few weeks ago. I'll guess there was not a backup to restore the images. That's really sad.

You're right, this is a problem other forums have as well where older threads don't have pics anymore. It's sad to think how many educational threads could be ruined by this.

There are a lot of internet techies from the early days of the internet who are concerned that as time goes on, and our tech improves, our computers will not be able to read some file types, hosted images will be lost, and more.

This is why I got mad when apple decided to not allow macOS to open 32-bit applications, or older directx, etc.

Unfortunate that SO MUCH info will be lost, it will be like the burning of the Library in Alexandria 2.0, except this would have been more forseeable :(

Well, there is good news. The images that aren't showing up are the ones that are linked from external sites. So they're still there -- it's just that CoinTalk isn't showing them. If you hit Reply on one of the messages with broken images, you can see the images in the preview pane.

Further discussion in this thread under Support and Feedback. Peter is aware of it, but hasn't been able to get it fixed yet.

So, don't panic -- the images aren't gone, and even the links aren't gone, they just aren't working right at the moment. When and if the issue is fixed, they'll all be back. (Unless, of course, the site hosting them goes under.)

Yep. I was just digging around on one of my older backup drives and came across some very old (~2000) video projects. Unfortunately, the Mac application that could open them is no longer available on my current machine. So now I'll need to dust off one of my older machines, and hope it can still boot and talk to the external drive.

Meanwhile, I've got a dozen or more MiniDV tapes that I've never imported, and one camcorder that could read them. I really, really should import them before the camera fails.

And before that, I've got a decade or so worth of VHS tapes -- and you can't buy a VHS player any more. And all my players are broken in one way or another. But, because I'm me, I haven't yet tossed the boxes of tapes. Future generations will no doubt praise me, if they aren't crushed under a collapsing pile of tapes.

I'm not smart enough to understand this but the images were uploaded to CT. I thought CT was the host.

There's no "smart" about it; it's confusing, period.

If you use "Upload a File" to post an image from your computer, it's hosted on CoinTalk. Those images still show up, and will stay until CoinTalk goes away.

If you use the Image icon to post an image by pasting in its URL, it's hosted externally. Those are the images that aren't displaying properly right now.

If you copy an image from somewhere and paste it into a message, it... depends? I've had it show up as an uploaded file, and I've had it show up as a linked image. I haven't gone through the different combinations to figure out what controls it.

I really hope Peter can figure out how to fix it.

The formats have been stable regardless of the Operating System or digital technology used. And this has nothing to do with cointalks current troubles. gIFs and JPGs and TIFF files from the 1990's and before can still be read by most software and finding the algorthism to read them is easy enough. It is the instability of the internet itself that is more problematic for historical purposes. Websites come and go and we are at a state now where much of the internet (that is websites) is evaportating rapidly.

I'm too dumb to figure anything out when it comes to computers. I hope someone else can succeed.

Either that or the hosting server of their choice.
There is a copyright issue with that, though. Once it is hosted on cointalk, there is a copyright license agreement between you and cointalk, whatever that is.

That is not graphics, they are video, and since they are "projects", they are likely specific to a specific software that turns them into video. Video is more complex of a problem than graphics because they combine formats, audio and graphics, to produce synchronized video. You need to look at the underlining files and see what formats they are under. They may be readable, or they might be proprietary to specific software. Our family doesn't use proprietary software because my father is a tin hatted crazy about Free Software. We weren't allowed as kids, and I still don't use software under unfriendly copyright.

Oof, I still regret hosting my images on PhotoBucket. I sometimes see threads from 10-15 years ago pop up, when I put images in Photobucket. Either the images aren't there anymore, or they have an awful photobucket logo plastered across a low-res version, or I get an email that too many people are trying to view my images and I need to pay to upgrade. Really awful.

Garlicus Debt is dumb, cash is king.

Like important files and documents, it’s always good to print a physical copy, as well.
For pictures, you can have them printed by an online company or go to CVS, Walgreens, Walmart or wherever and have them printed. Easier to leave them for generations to come, as well.

I also, unfortunately, have around 50 mini dv tapes of family events from the 90s. None of them are readable as the media deteriorates over time and the camcorders chew them up when trying to play. The last successful video transfer I did from a mini dv was in 2005.

I didn't pay Photobucket the $300 per year ransom. Some of mine still show up with the logo in low res. Some don't show at all.

I still have the original images of everything I have ever posted, on several backups but can't do anything to fix an old thread. Guess I have a good reason to post them again.

VHS recorder/players are readily available at any thrift store, on e-bay, and on community apps like OfferUp and Craigslist. I have 6-8 in my garage and have changed out the two we are using several times as they go bad. A few years ago, I found a brand new Toshiba in a sealed box at Goodwill.
