i finally have this note in hand and i just dont see how it could have gotten such a low grade. being in a slab i really cant tell if it has been pressed and its really hard to detect any embossing. but that just might be because of the note being in the slab. there are no fold or tears that i can see. please all you currency people out there give me your honest opinion. did it deserve the grade it received or should i resubmit. thanks in advance:thumb:
If that is a VF, I want to see a CU. I am not a paper guy, mostly coins for me, but I will say this, that thing looks undergraded to me. Aren't VF paper pieces, supposed to have more folds? Or maybe a discoloration? IDK, but that is one nice note.
to be honest - with such a slim margain on the top and bottom .. were the edges trimmed? I dont have alot of experience with graded notes, but from what i have seen, they might be off a grade or two, but i have never known them to be off 20 points or so.... i would have to guess, the note has been pressed, repaired, trimmed... or something.
I say innocent! Send it back in again. You could have this your whole life wondering, or send it in again and be a little more sure. Probably knocked down for the trim job/processing.
see this is the biggest issue i have with slabbed notes. they do mostly slabb anything made from paper, as discussed in another thread... so why dont they make note of why a note was downgraded ON the slab insert?? i makes no sense other then the TPG wantingmore money from the resubmittals..... Is there a way to contact the TPG, give the cert number and get a reason whyt he note was graded as such?
i know some of the TPG's do notate stains, repairs and things of that nature. thats why i thought after looking at this note in hand i felt it was under graded. i was thinking it should be a 45 EF or so. i guess i will wait a little while longer before i make my decision. i dont think i would resubmit to PMG though even that they are my favorite TPG for currency. i was thinking PCGS for this one
I almost bought the exact same thing, FR 1173, in a PCGS holder graded at XF 40. Looked great on the front, but there was one pretty obvious fold on the back. Yours looks nicer. I passed...going to wait and see if I find an XF 45 or something...or a VF like that one!
I'm just learning about paper, but other $10 golds i've seen have similar margins, and I have seen notes in lots worse shape get that grade. IMHO i'd resubmit it.
i think i will resubmit. this note just looks just to good. i try to find flaws and dont see any major ones at all. it could be pressed. that i cannot tell. i might bring it to a few dealers and see what they say
Have you put a bright light behind the note yet to see through it? I use the 60w bulb in my desk lamp. I have a few notes that look great under the light, but a bunch of pressed wrinkles become painfully obvious when it's backlit.
Good point Klunky... I would suggest a UV light Urban. As mentioned before..someone saw something that alerted them. I tend to agree with DJ that a 20 point misgrade is not too likely. Now on the other side of the coin, it is possible and you will only be able to justify it for yourself by re-submitting. I have an account at PCGS and if you do not want to pay the member fees let me know. I would be happy to submit it for you with a return address to you...as long as you pay the fees and shipping I will not mind at all. Let me know. RickieB
i have not yet looked at it with a backlight or UV light. i will have to try that tomorrow. i dont think it is off by 20 but i would say it should grade at least 45. if the note still looks as good as it does in the slab i am going to take up RickieB up on his offer. thanks so much for everyones opinions. they have opened my eyes things to look out for.
if you are looking for a nice UV light ... let me point you to an pretty cheap and unlikely source i have 2 cats ... and well, they dont always make it to the litter box. and while i contemplate a kitty cook off on my grill! i went to the local supermarket, and found this thing called urine off or somethign like that. it has this chemical that is supposed to neutralize kitty urine (waste of time) but also includes a UV light becuase kitty pee glows under UV light! I use mine all the time on foreign notes to determine Pick number, or if its real lol its a handy piece of tech... and told my wife i dont want it near any kitty pee (cant risk cross contamination lol)
i actually have one. i honestly dont know why i never used it. lol well i guess i know what i can do with it now:thumb:
well the uneven cut does not help. any pin holes? The cut on the bill margins is a factor, and in this case as you all can see, it is lacking.
i have yet to see any pinholes. i will check it tomorrow under UV and regular light to further inspect.
Nice note Urban. Here is the note that I got from RickieB. It also looks under graded, but using the back light method a fold reveals itself. Which would mean that it was probably pressed by someone trying to remove the fold. Fold + Press = 35 . Still a great note though and I will never part with it . I hope your note is just mis-graded.....................................................John
I just ran into the same thing with a HA purchase. I really think they made a mistake with your bill. This has been my main problem with the TPG's and trying to learn how to grade bills when some 30 to 45's look unbelievable and I don't understand there grade for that bill. I have the same dilemma with a note I just bought from HA and this is what they said about my bill. Fr. 1505* $2 1928D Legal Tender Note. PMG Very Fine 30. Seemingly an undergraded example of this early red seal star as we can only make out three vertical folds. The paper is bright and the print quality exceptional. We have sold this note in the past when it brought $115.I just bought my bill for $60 with BP, Which I thought was a steal
so why dont all tpg's list the reason for a downgraded note on the holder?? dready - that example you posted with the black light is awsome! thank you. I have heard folks mentioning it would work, but not really haveing any pressed notes myself 9at least none i know of lol) then i couldnt test it. But your example shows exactly what to look for if you use the black light - thanks!
