Has anyone had any great finds in attics, crawspaces, in walls, dug up etc. ? I found a few single common silver coins while metal detecting. Also My wifes friend found around 100 morgans above the garage in an old home.
My step dad and I were moving a garage. When we were bracing the walls and putting more supports inside to support the move we found a little hidden wall and behind it was an old mason jar and it was full of silver coins. I didn't search the jar but there was morgan dollars, peace dollars and walking half dollars from what I could see. The garage belonged to my step dad's farther, so we gave him the coins since they were his and he said that he forgot that he even had them there. Maybe the next time I visit I will see if he will let me search the jar.
I havent found any in the attic, walls or anything like that. I do have a couple of boxes and a desk full of coins I have hoarded and never had the time to check them. So now I am selling them on ebay. 1 lot at a time. If I had the time to check them I would not sell them. This is a pic of my desk a little while ago.
My wifes father died and her mother a year later. While cleaning out their house prior to selling it, we found several mason jars filled with silver Ike's, Benji's, Walkers, Kenney's, and copper Wheaties. No Morgans. The old man used to sell "antiques" at swap meets so I believe he found these in the change he received. Other than the silver value nothing exceptional. I gave the Wheat's to my grandson so he could start a collection.
I posted this a while back, but it fits here, so I'll tell the story again. Hopefully some new eyes will read it. Anyway, one of my wife's uncles bought an old building downtown in the early 60s. There was a wall safe that was locked. They broke into it and found a collection. Lots of buffalo and V nickels, complete dime set from 1916 to 1959 (excluding the 16-d and 21-d), 1877-cc quarter, some Barber quarters, complete Washington set to 1960, 5 bust halves, most Walkers and Franklins, over 20 Morgan and Peace dollars, and the best was a BEAUTIFUL 1871 dollar. They tried to contact previous owners, but had no luck. He held onto the collection and no one ever came asking for it. He died about 15 years ago and his wife, the aunt, left the collection at the bottom of her closet. Eventually she found out I was into coins and let me look at it. Had a shop look through it and make a buy offer. I had convinced myself it was going to be out of my price range, so maybe I could pick out a few coins and sell the rest to the shop on her behalf. The offer was certainly fair, but not as high as I expected. Talked to the wife and decided to buy the whole thing. The aunt was relieved to keep it in the family and not get ripped off. She gave it to me for the shop's offer, minus 50 bucks for my time!!! It was great being able to get a collection that hadn't been touched in 50 years at a wholesale price. And before I get any flack, I went back to the shop and paid them for their trouble since they spent time pricing a collection that I bought. A few months after that, the owner offered me a job and now I'm there on a part-time basis. Really fun seeing all the collections come through the door.
