There are no coin shops in my area, the only coins I can buy here are at the flea markets. The vendors have them outrageously priced. Would you recommend buying online? The last several coins/dollars I have got were bought online. Here's some examples of what they have them priced at the flea market: $1 Silver Centificate: $8 Mercury Dime: $6 Barber Dime: $8 Liberty Walking Half: $8 One of the vendors had a Susan B. Anthony that said "Close Date". What does that mean? She had $79 on it! Well, sorry for the rant, but I'm not sure what to do at this point. Thanks for reading/listening. Matthew
Seems all the prices are high at the flea market. Close date means the rim looks thicker and closer to the date. It is listed in redbook and there was a thread on here about it recently. I would try to find a coin show or there is a perfect oportunity for you to post an ad in the paper about buying and selling coins. Should be able to do well with that. Giid luck!
Mathew one of the 1st things you need to do is to buy a couple of books and study the coins try the Red book for starters, this will give you a better understanding of what you are looking at and the prices. As for fle markets have you tried haggling?
That is tough....You don't want to get ripped off, but I can certainly understand wanting to examine the coin or note in person before you lay down some hard-earned money on it. I have absolutely no clue where in VA you are located at, but maybe there is something within driving distance even if it requires heading to another state. Also, check antique shops...You never know what you will find in there...
Looks like there's a Shenandoah Coin Shop in Chilhowie which, if Mapquest is right, is only about 10 miles from you.
Theres nothing wrong with buying online. The trick is to find a trusted dealer. Some of the greatest coin collections of all time were assembled through the mail. Guy~
If you are into cents then have a word with Arizona Jack or Penny Lady I am also fairly sure that they could point you inb the direction of other reputable dealers also have a word with Clembo :smile but please do this via PM and not in the forums :hail:
I have a similar situation, the closest coin shop is about 30 miles from me. Buying online can offer you a wide selection, but as De Orc notes, you need to do some research on the coins you are interested in. A lot of research can be done on-line. Spend some time with your favorite search engine. Also, search here on CoinTalk for threads on coin dealers. A lot of good info. I will also second the thought to look at the dealers that advertise here on CoinTalk. Top notch people, with good coins. :thumb:
The town I live in (Saltville) has a population of only 2500. The flea markets I refered to are about 35 miles away. I think that Shenandoah Coin shop is out of business or something. Every time I've been there they are closed. The flea market dealers will not change their prices. I overheard a conversation while looking at some of their coins. The customer said "That's well over book price." and the dealer said "I cannot sell at book price." I'll look on here to see about the coin dealers. I have been wanting to buy a red book, but the ones I have seen around are for previous years.
If you don't have access to any book stores, I know you can find a copy on a large on line book seller. If all else fails, check a local library.
