Question about online orders

Recently I placed an order for 2 coins on one of the major advertisers in Coinage magazine. My account was billed immediatly. A week later I was contacted and informed that my coins were not available and to call them back. I checked the site and verified that the coins were not listed, and asked the dealer to cancel the order and refund my money. They responded that they would.

Afterwards, I recalled that the last time I bought a coin from this source, it took about 3 weeks for them to deliver.

Question: Do dealers offer coins, take your money, then go out and purchase the coins, shipping to you when they get them?

This dealer advertises shipping in 48 hours after placing order, so I assume they have the coins in hand.

I am a little miffed, since the coin I ordered was a good price for the grade.

I think the dealer just had an error in the quantity on hand.
I think that the dealer does or thought that he had the coins in hand.

If it takes 3 weeks I would never buy from this dealer. You should have the coin(s) in hand within a about 2 weeks.

I would not use them and I expect to have the coins in my hand with in 7 days. I have not had any problems with the dealers I use online.

I would say this store just screwed up their on-hand.
What I shake my head in disbelief are those ebay sellers that have those new lincoln cents for sale even tho they are not released. Then they claim that this is a 'pre-sale'.
    Give me a break....

As per eBay you can sell pre-sale stuff as long as you have it hand within 30 days.

That is totally inexcusable. I would contact the owner if possible and inform them of your recurring problem with orders by their company. Than , look for another source for you purchases. There are many reputable dealers around, than to revisit those that are not and continually provide you with poor service.

I'm not a dealer so I don't know for certain. But the same thing has happened to me and I feel that sometimes dealers take the money and only afterward buy the coin. And if the price of the coin goes up in the meantime, they always have the old "inventory mistake" excuse and are happy to refund the money rather than make the sale at a loss. Keep in mind that this is the wild wild west of businesses with few rules and dubious ethics. Buyer beware.

I can tell you this, I have never in 45 + years have had an issue such as is being described with any of my network of dealers . To clarify " dealer", are you referring to Ebay sellers or Internet only dealers?

Mid Cities area, between Fort Worth and Dallas.

Internet Dealer. I was happy with the price and quality of the first purchase, just took a while to deliver. This dealer is a "major" advertiser in the coin mags. Full cover ads. I ordered 2 coins from 2 different catagoies. Both catagories are now posted as "no inventory" available.

Ok. I have a better idea of the "wholesale" hawkers you are working with. I would like to suggest that you stay away from those advertisements in the coin magazines. Hopefully your are aware of the Texas Numismatic Association (TNA) and either are or will become a member. In the Fort Worth area you have the Forth Worth Coin Company: Ron Swiney Coins. In Dallas ( BIG D) Heritage Galleries; Walnut Gold and Silver; Dallas Rare Coin ( if they are still in business) Mike Follett Rare Coins.

Try working consistently with a few of these Dealers, build a rapport. Let them know when and what you are looking for, and have patience. Go to the Coin shows, meet other dealers. Remember, your the one investing, so why not get the best expert help as possible instead of dealing with hawkers who would not remember your name if you did business with them for 10 yrs. If I can help you out otherwise, let me know. There are great people here too, ask for opinions, you wont bleed to much.
