I have been working on this one for about a year now. I didn't have much to work with, and still don't. But, I think I at least know what it is. I will keep at it slowly to enhance it. There isn't a before photo. I only started that practice a few months ago. I think what I have is: Gallienus Billon Antoninianus. 267-268 AD. GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right / IOVI CONS AVG, goat standing or walking right, ς in ex. RIC 207, RSC 341. Comments and corrections welcome.
What do you mean by "work"? Are you cleaning it? If so, I think you have gotten this as clean as you can, and I would call it done. It looks like there are already numerous cleaning scratches in the fields. I worry that any additional cleaning might damage it further.
You are correct. I am doing the photos and putting it in the album. Some of them end up with fine scratches. But, it was unrecognizable when I got it. Thanks for the feedback.
Exactly. Sometimes the only way to remove a buildup is to scrape it off. I use brass tools for this because brass is softer than bronze and generally won't leave scratches. But the surfaces of some antoniniani seem particularly soft, and I have scratched my share, too.
Sometimes the goat faces left: It's part of Gallienus's popular zoo series. Read more about it here. Read about the officina markings on Gallienus' coins of Rome here.
