Here's a very interesting error Lincoln cent I recently got back from grading at NGC and that Todd (bluccphotos.com) just photographed for me. It has four different errors: Off center, Double Clips, Uniface Reverse, on a Fragment Planchet! Pretty hard to imagine that one coin could have so many mistakes!
I'm curious if you can help explain to me how the TPGs grade an error coin based on the grade scale when there is so much of the coins design missing? It seems 'mint state' is misleading in such a case. To achieve the ms 65, was the TPG only grading that portion of the design that's visible: this crescent shaped area from vertical center at 6 o'clock to about 10 o'clock on the obverse only, bearing LIBERTY and Lincolns shoulder? Then the rest of the notations are just listing the errors but have less to do with calling the grade? Thanks in advance.
I believe the grading is based on what remains of the image on the coin and the planchet itself. It's still evident, even if there were a lot less of the details left, if a coin is in mint state or circulated condition, and based on the quality of the image and the planchet together, you can still give the coin a numerical grade.
Thank you. I thought that might be the way they did this but I wanted to confirm with others given the severity and complexity of your error coin.
it kinda looks like it might be a chain strike as well with that flat edge on the struck portion, but it could be a result of the messed up planchet.
not sure I see the "fragment" planchet... but still, an off-center, clipped, and uniface error is pretty nice
I was just reading up on 'clovers' today (a coin with 3 mint errors) but 4??!!!! Very nice, that would be an amazing coin to own. Congrats on the great grade!
Any idea as to the date ...I do not see any zinc peeping thru. ..Can we asuume it is a Memorial but prior to 1982.........Very cool coin. Also ,what kind of retail range would this coin have.
I am guessing it's early 1970's, and I think it's value is in the $500 range due to the dramatic multiple errors.
