Does the Gouge Bother You?

Does the gouge on the reverse of the coin, on the breast of the eagle bother you?
It doesn't with me, I think it adds a little more character to the coin, most certain flaws in a coin like this, make it so, the coin gets body bagged, I guess this one slid by.
It is weird to say, but I kinda like the gouge, many people say buying this coin was a mistake, but I like the price I paid for it, and I like the coin in general. Will I ever buy a coin with a gouge like this again? Maybe, maybe not, depends on price point, and how I like the coin, I think I rushed into buying the coin, stupid rookie mistake, but I wanted it, and it is not like I paid a ridiculous price. This was my first MS64 morgan, so it has more than just a value with a dollar sign to it to me. Most of my other morgans are 63's, but I didn't want this coin to feel lonely, so I got some more 64's, comparing the 64's I own with this one, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if I re submitted and it came back body bagged, or in a MS63 holder, it is either a high end 63 or a very low end 64, it has less bag marks than a 63, but that gouge, I would think being it down a point, or deem it un-gradable
So the question remains, does the gouge on the reverse of this coin, bother you?

I do not think it is a gouge. If it is I don't see how it ever made it into the holder. To me it looks raised - almost like a die chip. So I can't answer your poll question.

 

It isn't raised, it is more sunken in, so maybe a just a chip, this is a deep cut into the cut looks like, I called it a gouge, and some others did as well, so I don't know, call it what you want, but change the word "gouge" in your head if you want to, I just wanted opinions on if the reverse of the coin, in the area of the chip/gouge on the breast would bother you.

 

I can see what you are saying though, the longer I look at that photograph, the more it looks raised over the breast, when that is not the case. I guess it is one of those "see it in hand" kinda things, but trust me, it is not over the surface, it is sunken down like somebody cut into the lower part of the eagle's breast.

 

yes, it bothers me, but looks like a hit from another coin's rim.

 

I don't like it. It stands out way too much for my liking!!

 

The bag marks or nicks just to the right of the wing bother me more than whatever it is on the breast.

 

It's probably a heavy bag mark but because there aren't any other marks, they let it slide. :kewl:

While it is a distraction, I think it's still worthy of a hime but that gash will keep the value down.

You see I like the gash/gouge/mark/nick whatever you want to call it. It makes the eagle look tough, like he just got into a fight, but he won, and he is standing in victory.
I don't know, while others might see it is a distraction, and makes it look ugly, I see it in a different light, maybe it is because it is my coin and I am taking up for it, whatever the case may be, I like it

My eyes were immediately drawn to the field where the bag mark is. The gouge on the breast looks like just another bag mark and I don't think it would be cause for the coin to be body bagged. The grade appears to be appropriate for the coin. Without either gouge/bag mark, the coin would have graded possibly 2 grades higher. Nice coin Travis.

 

See that is weird, I have never even really noticed the area in which you speak of, before. I guess my eyes were paying more attention to the gouge/hit/nick/mark/gash whatever we are calling it these days.

Just depends on what your definition of problem is.
Some see it as a problem, others don't.
Yes you can argue that a gouge is a gouge, but others can argue that it doesn't bother them, or adds more character to the coin.
Just depends on how you look at things I guess.

 

Whether it bothered me or not would depend on the price.

 

Price aside, in general, does it bother you.
I am not asking if it would bother you if you were planning to buy it, but just in eye appeal, does the hit on the breast bother you?

 

I love your valuation and meaning of this gouge. That makes it worth more than a slab grade to me. But it's great that you have such a high graded coin with the gouge. I also didn't see the gouge on the breast feathers upon initial review of the image. This could just be the photo and if held in hand I might have noted it immediately in natural light. I happened to look at the coin before I read your post/poll description. I noted the bag marks in the open fields, those stand out to me much more than the gouge. Neither type of gouge nor mark bothers me and I hope that the results of your poll do not change your mind as you currently have it made. It's a great coin and as you said holds more than one meaning for you in terms of being the first ms64 morgan, decent price, and the 'tough-ness' you related.

Yes it holds more sentimental value than any kind of retail value, and if I ever decided to sell (Probably won't ever want to, but may have to) taking a hit in price would be no shock.
I mean I think the gouge adds more of a "spice" it gives the coin more "flavor" Me LIKEY.
The coin is a nice one, and would be a stronger 64, or maybe a candidate for a 65 without that mark on the breast.

Yes but I don't think you are understanding my point, I understand yours.
It is not like I go to places and LOOK for problem coins, no, that is not what I do.
I explained in the previous posts why the coin meant a lot, and I have no plans to sell it in the future, or even upgrade for that matter, I'm fine with the coin the way it is, all I wanted was other people's opinions on if it bothered them or not.
