I haven't posted here in quite some time, althought I do check in and read the posts from time to time. Well I finally did it. I sent off 16 of my favorite coins to be graded by PCGS yesterday! Man I hated parting with these "pretties" even if they are insured. These are part of some coins my Grandfather gave me when I was a boy. That has been a while ago! :D

    Coins included:

1843 O Seated Liberty quarter (my grades AU)
1938 D Liberty Walking half AU
    1938 D Liberty Walking half XF+
    1932 D Wash Quarter F
    1825 Capped Bust half XF
1853 O Liberty Seated half (rays and arrows) XF
1846 O Liberty Seated half AU
1854 O Liberty Seated half XF
    1921 D Merc Dime VG10
    1937 D Merc Dime FSB MS 65
    1937 D Merc Dime FSB MS 65
    1936 D Merc Dime FSB MS 64
    1931 D Merc Dime MS 63
    1916 D Merc Dime AG
    1916 D Merc Dime AG
    1916 D Merc Dime G

I know that some aren't worth all that much, but I like them anyway. Some of those dimes I am particulary interested to see how they grade. I will post the results when they come back in 2-3 weeks. It will be interesting to see how my grading stacks up!

PS. I found the three 1916 D Mercs and some others in a bunch of silver coins that my Grandfather buried in about 1939. I helped him dig them up. What great memories!

Sorry I didn't follow through. I don't have the coins with me right now, but will post tomorrow. I was pretty disappointed overall. Everything graded worse than what I thought and some even were "ungradeable". I think that means that they were cleaned. I didn't clean them. Maybe my Grandad did. The older of all these coins my Grandad gave me about 40 or so years ago. A couple of those dimes I shouldn't have sent off to be graded. It cost more for grading than they are worth! Ever do that???!!! Anyway...tomorrow I will get back. Thanks for asking. Carl

    Sorry about your bad experience.
Next time you want to send stuff in, post pics here before, so we might be of assistance and tell you if it is worth it or not :D

Sorry to hear Carl! Hard to tell with pictures online and everyone has an opinion and not all of them are the same so I understand you wanting to get them looked at by a professional. That said no one wants to spend money for grading that turns out bad. Again - sorry it didn't work out, when I saw the thread I was anxios to hear the good news not expecting it to be all bad... I'm sure there are some lessons there beyond not having your coins graded by a TPG, I'm just not sure what that might be...

    Best Regards ~ Darryl

The buzz is that PCGS is pretty brutal right now. Even pro crack-out artists are reporting low batting averages.

All I have to say is I am sorry. I remember when I first sent coins to NGC and my results were terrible. I was very discouraged by the results but I keep studying and learning. IMO there is a big learning curve when getting coins professionally graded.

I feel that sending coins to get graded is like playing the lottery, sometimes you win and sometimes you loose!! Just hope you win more than you loose.

Ouch! Sorry to hear this. The news really kills the anticipation I'm sure. I just read through this thread which started before I was a CT member. I'd offer the perspective to take this as a learning experience and one that can teach us all what to expect and how to gauge coins before sending them in. Next time you will probably fair better if you try again in future. Can't wait to see your pics and grades. Sometimes what you were expecting but didn't receive isn't always so bad when others look at the same results.

I understand. It's easy to feel that way, since we aren't in control of the results.

I prefer to think of it like poker. The lottery is pure luck, but poker is a game of skill with an element of luck.

Don't ever just send coins in "hoping for the best" - particularly these days. That approach is disappointing - you'll lose more than you win. I'm not saying the OP did that. I'm saying I have done it and learned the hard way ! Never again.

It's a game of skill with an element of chance.

It also reveals an important truth - the vast majority of raw coins are overgraded, by dealers and owners alike. The slab-haters need to remember that when thinking they got a "bargain" raw coin, and would never pay extra for a slab. Yes, they're paying less... but might be getting less than they think. (Again - no reflection on the OP).

I am copying and posting the coins from the original post with the presumed grade by me. Obviously I'm a real tenderfoot when it comes to grading. Like my mother in law says, "every ole crow thinks hers is the blackest" !

All in all this really was a big disappointment to me! Maybe I'll try NCG at some point in the future.

No pics now. I am such a novice at that, but will try later. I will NEVER send anything off again without running it past my coin dealer or you folks. I learned an expensive lesson!

    All for now. Carl

Every non-gradable PCGS slab has a code which indicates why the coin wasn't gradable. PCGS codes 'em like this :

    xxxx.yy/zzzzzzzzz

Where "yy" is the grade. Graded coins have 1-70, but non-gradable coins have a number in the 80s-90s. Here is the web page which shows the codes :

    http://www.pcgs.com/grades.chtml

That might be enlightening. You might disagree with PCGS' non-gradable assertion. It's not unthinkable it would pass the second time - but not likely.

Thanks for the update, Carl. Sorry to hear of your grades/disappointment. To be honest, that's about par for the course for people new to the TPG game, so don't get down on yourself....Mike

    Carl,

For the coins that did grade you were pretty close on most of them. The cause of the coins that did not grade would probably not be identifiable to many collectors. I am sure it takes a trained eye to see the types of issues PCGS picked up on. As 900fine pointed out look for the codes then study the coins to see if you can pick up on it. You have real life examples of what to look for. Thanks again for sharing your experience - it's a very good lesson for the rest of us!

    Best Regards ~ Darryl

I sent in a cleaned saint for a second time (the first time they weren't slabbing them). I am waiting on the results

The expected MS coins that came back AU-58 indicates one of the harder areas to grade, so don't be hard on yourself for those. DO however, go over the coins very carefully and see if you can tell why the rejected ones were not graded. The code will tell you what to look for. Examining the 58s can save you a lot of hair-pulling in the future.
