At first I thought this could be an annealing error. But now I suspect it may be PMD. But I wanted a second opinion.
I think your right but I am no expert but it doesn't look plated or environmental damage to me you might have something there.
Or it could be missing clad layers/parcial odd how its on both sides though it might be possibly fake?if it is real and its a state quarter this could be worth getting certified.
This is strange. To my knowledge, the 2003S MO SQ was produced as a proof only coin. I would think that the quality control at the Mint would have caught this one. Maybe @Fred Weinberg would know something.
How much does it weigh? It seems like traces of the outer layer are showing so maybe someone used acid to remove it. If it is missing the clad layer, IMO it would be extra special as only proof coins were made for the 03-S MO SQ.
It's an Impaired proof. Environmental toning damage. No missing clad or error if any kind. I read somewhere if a cleaning technique for silver using Tabasco sauce. That quarter looks like it could of been marinated
Could we get a picture of the edge also please? My opinion, it's a proof coin, it was sanded in a circular pattern, and it was fake bronzed with a spray or solution or a paint from a crafting store, not electroplated bronze. appears to also have been antiqued possibly. But it looks like that fake crafting stuff to me and acetone should remove it. you'll still have a heavily badly whizzed proof coin though. my one hope is it's 2003, and it could be silver under there. Then it's a score. surface is all kinds of wrong for what it is, even if you disregard the color of it. it can't not be PMD.
