And I thought I got my MS64 for cheap, should've held out for this one, or not. http://cgi.ebay.com/1935-D-PERFECT-...:2|39:1|72:1205|293:1|294:50#ebayphotohosting
I don't know anything about SGS. The picture of the slabbed cent isn't good enough to tell if it is graded correct or not. Need to see the obverse too. Put in a minimal bid if you can now.
SGS(Star Grading Service) is the biggest joke of all the TPGs. More than likely it grades 63. If you do a search on this site, you will see what I am talking about.
This is correct. These guys don't grade...they just put any luster containing coin in a slab and mark it MS70. Their sales prices reflect that. Stay away from them.
Actually, I will admit I was wrong on a comment I made. SGS does accept submissions, but I wouldn't dream of doing it. http://www.stargrading.org/
Accugrade was just the beginning of the "guy in his garage" grading companies. It's a lot worse these days.
I have read in the past that people here have tried ton contact them to submit a coin only to be told that they are too busy to accept submissions at this time. I have never heard of anyone submitting to them successfully.
Search around this board - it has been posted on here somewhere that they are one and the same. Somebody did some searching can't remember how they found it, but I do think they are one and the same.
SGS and Abon are owned by the same people. Occasionally they may slip up and actually grade something correctly but I sure wouldn't buy an SGS coin without holding it in my hand. Abon/SGS are a disgrace to coin dealers everywhere IMHO. I just checked the NGC population on 35-D red. 178 have been graded as MS67RD. None higher. Anyone have PCGS stats? I think that says it all. Might be a 63 and of course the pics aren't that great. Wonder why that is?
I wouldnt trust the grades, but to look at the coins Im not sure the asking buy it now proces are that far out of wack. If I ever got one slabbed like that id break it open for sure
If the color and luster are like the photo in hand, I would say it has been altered and recolored. IMO. Obviously not close to a 70. Jim
If I remember correctly, accugrade was the very first slabber and inventor of the slab. SGS is poison, no doubt.
Thanks Pennywise I think that seals the deal. Neither PCGS nor NGC has slabbed one as 69 let alone 70. Food for thought. SGS should start a population report. I may have to start a thread about that!
