CAC census - online !

Well, we certainly had an interesting thread about the CAC recently. Turns out they now have their census report online ! Here it is :

Too bad, they don't post how many were submitted but didn't get sticker for each grade...

 

I think CAC serves a purpose and I do wish they would supply the numbers of the slabs they reviewed. Those that got the little sticker and those that did not. It might prevent people from sending in the same slab twice - plus I could see if a slab was sent in and went un-stickered.

 

I think everyone (except the TPGs and the submitters of non-stickered coins) would like to see this information, however I can understand why the CAC chose not to share it.

 

I agree, being able to type in a serial number and see if it passed or failed would be a benefit to collectors but I see how that could be bad for TPG's.

 

So they have the information? I am not sure why they would not want to share it - other than wanting to see the slabs as many times as possible. I wonder if people are re-submitting slabs to see if they get a sticker.

 

I see how that could also be bad for collectors who are trying to sell coins that were submitted to CAC but didn't sticker. What's potentially good for one party to a transaction can be potentially bad for the other.

 

I agree Mark it could impact the sales of some. I still think they should provide the information - as a independent they should not have to protect anyone. I can not think of a better way to show the general coin collecting community how impartial they are. So if you submit coins to them you take the good with the bad - to me it legitimizes them more. Don't get me wrong I see nothing wrong with CAC and what they are doing - kind of neutral about them at this point and just see it as a money making enterprise.

LOL - maybe ebay sellers should start hawking their coins with the phrase -"Never submitted to CAC - you could get that green or gold sticker and make some bucks".

For the record, personally, even though I can appreciate the reasons for CAC not doing so, I would prefer that the information be made public.

Mark, how do you feel about a collector buying a coin which, unknown to him, had previously been submitted to CAC and didn't sticker. Should he be able to try to sell it, without potential buyers being able to find that out, at the click of a button? For me, it's a tough call.

 

thats a worthwhile question. Again I would have to say that ultimately the benefit or consequences of any purchase is at the discretion of the buyer. This is where CAC can be a very useful tool if we put forth effort and time to learning.

 

I suppose "the bad" is the chance of failing The Sticker Test, and the whole world knowing it ?

If so, could the publication of failed attempt unstickered slab data have a chilling effect on CAC submissions ?

 

Sure it could/would.

 

I can't speak for anyone else, but I know that I would have been FAR more selective in which coins I sent to the CAC had they made available the "not stickered" data.

 

I don't own any CAC stickered coins yet but I was thrilled to run across this post. Great info and thankfully it's free. I bookmarked it.

 

Mark , if he's in it for an investment he should be shrewd enough to know about CAC and look it up beforehand . But you're right it is a tough call .

A population report is fine...but what I would like to see is a database which you can look up the serial number of your slab and see if your sticker is authentic. Then, you could know if that slab had ever been submitted and not received a sticker.
