It's always been hard for me to save my money and get the better coins. Every time it seems I have several hundred in my coin fund, I always buy a bunch of $100 coins or something like that...I've never bought just one coin for anything over $300 or so. I've held out and saved again and I'm determined to buy one of the following... 1916-D merc dime in good 1937-D 3 legged nickel in XF 1909-S VDB in AU-UNC Which do you think is the best deal at the moment? Eventually, I'd like to have all three, but I have to start somewhere. I'd rather get the coin now with the most growth potential, so I don't have to spend way more cash in a couple years to get the same coin in the same condition. My guess would be the Lincoln with all the popularity of the new cents, but it's just a guess. I'm curious to hear other opinions. Thanks.
I don't collect wheat cents, but I have read here on Coin Talk that particular "s" has gone up a lot. The Buffalo Nickel you mention I don't think I would buy right now. I guess I would get the Mercury Dime. Do remember though as I type this it is very easy to do since it is not my money being used, it's yours. But, whatever you decide I'm sure you'll be happy, obviously any of these three you want.
I'll have to wait a bit anyway if I end up doing the cent. I have enough money now to afford the dime and almost the buffalo nickel. I'm certainly in no huge hurry, so maybe I'll hang back for a while.
As most people know the general rule is "buy the best you can afford". IMO of the three choices you listed the preferred order should be: 1. 1909-S VDB in AU-UNC (less likely to want to replace it in the future) 2. 1916-D merc dime in good (nice coin but aim for a better grade) 3. 1937-D 3 legged nickel in XF (nice coin but a variety) A few other considerations: - 1914-D Lincoln in AU-UNC - 1922 Plain Lincoln in F-VF (if you like varieties) - 1955 DDO Lincoln in XF-AU (if you like varieties)
1921-D Walking Liberty half It's been a few months now that I have been looking at 1921-D Walkers. I must have looked at 3 dozen of them and still looking. Had to pass on every one I've seen so far. Tough to find a nice one at a fair price.
Buy the one that you like the best. There is no assurance, whatsoever, that you will end up making money, so you might as well enjoy your purchase. These are popular coins, but they are generally available in fairly large quantities and not as "rare" as many people believe. With respect to the cent, the "popularity of the new cents" might have already caused the current price to be higher than it otherwise would be. The time to think about and buy an example for that specific reason, was long ago, not now. In other words, markets often anticipate and move based on expectations of future events. Once those events have taken place, the price is usually already factored in.
I'd get the 16D dime first, only because it's gone up the most in the least amount of time and is harder to find most of the time. I see 09s VDB's at every shop and every show I go to. Can't say the same thing for 16D dimes. But, like Mark mentioned, buy what you like. Guy~
IMO: 1909 s vdb they're hot right now so prices are up ... wait 1938d 3 legged are stable bit I think the buff's are abit underrated 1916 d is what I would buy due to slowly increasing value and always demand
I think you should pass on the 1909-s vdb, now is the 100's anniversary, everybody wants now, price for it went up alot during the past couple of years, and it's not rare, rolls were saved when it came out, wait until the cent is out of favor, then maybe consider it, there are thousands of 1909-s vdb in uncirulated condition, 1937-D 3 legged nickel is not so rare either. The total population for 1916-d of fine or better is only 1000, i think the dime is best choice.
For the best keys: I prefer: 1896 S Barber Quarter 1895 O Barber Dime 1892 S & O Barber Half $'s. And then go for the Buffalo, the other sets have been too hot for the last couple of years. The 3 legger has move up in price, but it hasn't gone nuts the way that the other two have. Then: Consider: andrew's 1916 SLQ. A true Wow! coin, altho a bit more than the others, go for at least VG. Then, there is the 1892 O micro O half $. A truly scarce coin.
