Anyone tell me what it is and is it worth more than 50 cents?

    Thanks,

That would be a silver commemorative half dollar from 1986 :)
    Maybe worth around $10

Wow! Barbers and Walkers! That's a bonanza... and would that '2005-S Proof' now be considered a 'circulated proof'?

Sweet find! How on earth are these things ending up in circulation! I can't imagine that anyone could mistake the metal content and type of coin for 'just another half dollar'... boggled! Great find though! Kudos!

Believe it or not, that particular commemorative half dollar is found more than you think.

That's so great, yet sad! I hate that these coins are getting beat up in circulation but a great thing to get hold of in a rolls search. This forum is so inspiring as to the amount of silver still out there.

I needed this, with 3 boxes of halfs in a row without a single silver piece.

I searched 11 rolls of pennies and found:
    7 log cabins (all philly)
    5 rail splitters (all denver)
    1 canadian penny (69)
    3 wheats (55 d, 56 d, 42 d)
AND a 1998 Wide AM....I'll post pics tomorrow. It is my first. :D

A bit sad, but true :(
Well, it is just that this commemorative half is found more often out of people finding commemorative halves. They are worth a little bit of money in 70 grade, but when they are AU55, there is not a whole lot of hope.. LOL Because they were never intended for circulation.

Not intended for circulation but they were minted with a legal tender value of 0.50¢, even though weighed out by their value in silver, those in the know would never pass them for just 0.50¢... That is you still could buy something with it at a value of 0.50¢ as I assume someone may have done with these to get them into circulation not knowing the metal content but rightly assuming the legal tender of 0.50¢.

    Exactly...

Wouldn't be surprised if some lady brought in her late husbands collection, then some company got it from the bank, in a roll, then gave it in change to somebody who had no clue what it was, and the cycle starts again until Hal goes to the bank gets some rolls, and finds the 1986 commemorative half dollar..:p

Here's how. People don't know anything about anything. Sorry, I'm feeling cynical tonight, but in general, ignorance is rampant...

Well, after reading about all the successes some of you guys have been having with roll searching halves I decided to pick up on my collection being that i'm up to date with Kennedys up to 1980. I went to two banks in my town, one on my corner with extremely rude tellers (hence why my account is across town in another bank) and got nothing and then my bank which happened to have two and a half rolls. Well, the rolls were mostly the 70's and in good condition and anything from the past 15 years was in bad shape, ironic. But as I was spreading the last roll out I noticed on the bottom a different tone showing on one coin, A bicentennial silver proof in AU condition. Not bad in my opinion, but I only filled one hole in my Dansco with a 1995-P. :thumb:

Yes it was, she was telling me about how someone brought in gold plated mint coins. I was expecting a few gold plated state quarters or something but instead it was 15 rolls of mint roll State Quarters and 40 rolls of Westward Journey nickels. I guess the gold plating she was talking about was some toning on the edge coins. I was able to put together quite a few P/D sets and only had a few rolls left over that were unmatched. Now I need to figure out if I want to search them and submit a few for grading or if I want to sell them as is.

I have found a single merc. in a box once. Usually you'll find a single silver roosie per box.

These probably get into circulation by some poor homeowner getting robbed. I know that in our area someone was robbed and it included a collection of coins. It turned out to be young adults that may have had no respect for what they stole.

Yeah, it's just disbelief but I understand the reality of factors. Thanks.
