At my coin club meeting, I bid on a grab bag of world coins because no one else did. So I got the following for $2. For you world coin specialists, anything juicy?

    Italy 1977 - coin with a 100 on it
    1952 3 pence (British?)
    1937 One Penny (large) British
1963 one penny (large) British (red)
    1961 One Penny (large) British
1969 10 New Pence (??) Queen Elizabeth on obverse
    1943 half penny British
1989 one penny (small) looks austrialian I think
    Mexican 1971/1981 Un Peso
    Mexican 1995/93 50C
    Mexican 1979 Cincuenta Centavos ??
Mexican 1955 Cinco Centavos with the ugliest Obverse portrait ever (see below)

    And two unidentified coins:
A Chinese looking one and an 1859 ???? with a hole in it :(

    Any help on the pics?

The 1 sen is Japanese, year 17(1884) under Meiji(Mutsuhito) rule. And I believe the last one is Portuguese.

LOL. I'll be more specific. Is this an old coin? Is it worth more than 15 cents?

Do you know what american year?

    Thanks. :D

I stated it below but I will say it again.;) 1884. You did alright at 15c. Worth a couple bucks.

    Correct!

More like 35-50¢ in such a worn condition that it's difficult to determine the shape of the dragon's scales.

Thanks! It took me a little while but I am starting to get a hang of dating Japanese coins. Well, Meiji-present.

The last one is a brazilian 500 Reis from the reign of Emperor Dom Pedro II, KM 464, ca. 6,3 grams, 0.1880 ASW

It's extremely tough to date pre-Meiji coinage - it doesn't have a date and you have to attribute the time span during which the individual variety was cast.

What do the following 3 things mean?
    • KM464,
    • ca.6
    • 0.1889 ASW
    Sorry for my ignorance. Thanks.

    Don´t be sorry, be happy ;) :p

KM 464: the Krause catalog number (Krause and something on M i guess  )

Ca. 6,3 grams: approximately 6,3 grams (coin weight)

0.1889 ASW: 0.1889 Actual Silver Weight = 5,8 grams of pure silver

KM is the Krause/Mishler number used to categorize coins in Krause Catalogue books.

ASW is Actual Silver Weight(in troy ounces).

Not quite sure on ca. but it weighs roughly 6.4 g, but more exact 6.375 grams.

    *Just as a note, I type slowwwwwww...:D

Yeah menji era coins give you the number of years that the current emperor had reigned. i love the 1890 - 1910 Sivler Dragons, but so many counterfeits. Traci
