My friend just came into an 1879 huge one dollar silver coin. Its bigger than any coin i have seen. I have had help from this site before and y'all were honest and real. So i recommended it to him and told him i would talk to someone on here.hopefully a moderator. I took some pictures but have to figure out how to get them on here again. My friend would like to know if this coin is even worth keeping.he got it from his mother that just passed.

Compare it to another coin... but to me it looks like a novelty item

Looks pretty poor to me. I am unsure of its authenticity, based off of the surfaces and odd rims.

They are morgan dollars, this one has a hole so it is considered damaged and worth
    silver if it is real.

I don't think its a real coin, to clarify. Maybe silver? unsure

I'd be surprised if that was actually a contemporary counterfeit. Highly unlikely due to size though.

Agreed, doesn't look like a real coin to me at all. Better luck next time! ;)

Unfortunately, I believe that your coin is indeed a novelty item. The details and relief are unlike that of a genuine coin.

One of the first things you should do is compare the diameter of your coin with that of a genuine coin. The diameter of a genuine Morgan Dollar is 38.1mm. If it is indeed a real coin it should have the exact same width.

If it was his mother's it should be kept as a keepsake. I don't see any other value to it.

It is fake though. That size is too much. Try researching the size of morgan dollars and use a app called Ruler. Its great for mm size

The Morgan dollar was produced from 1879-1904 and then again in 1921. It is 38.1mm in diameter, weighs 26.73gms, is made of 90% silver & 10% copper with silver content of .77344ozs.

It looks like a cast fake to me. The rough texture of the surfaces and the line through the reeded edge makes me think that.

Just a fun replica, enjoy it as a memento.

Yeah..... Fun novelty piece. Often used as drink coasters, oddly enough!

Do you have a digital scale or calipers?

Try doing the basics of weighing & measuring it to see if it matches Morgan Dollar dimensions.

You could also try an acid test. It’s not rare or anything and has a big hole so a little scratching to the rim won’t hurt it’s value.
