well for 25 bucks i think i stole this but we will see once it is here boiled and soaked in some VC... and for that price I not risking a whole lot for an extra NJ lol...
Man , that's a toasty one . I would see that as an endless battle to reveal the ID of this coin. Did you get a date at least ? Here's an excellent intro to NJ coppers . New Jersey Coppers: page 1 (nd.edu)
This is the 48-G {1787} . 500 dpi 250 dpi reverse 500 dpi 250 dpi 1787 Maris 48-g probably Rahway 1787 Goadsby and Cox NJ Copper Obverse: NOVA CÆSAREA 1787 Reverse: * E * PLURIBUS * UNUM * Weight: 142.9 g (9.26 grams) Diameter: 27.5 mm Reverse die alignment: 160° Comments: This is a second more circulated example of the variety discussed above. The shield is too worn to detect the die crack. There does not appear to be a crack over the M as on the previous example. Provenance: From the Robert H. Gore, Jr. Numismatic Collection.
Slight correction. It is 48-g, not 48-G. Maris used both upper and lower case letters to designate the reverse dies, hence reverse G is totally different from reverse g.
X3 looks better than most I have seen in the $20-$30 range first i have seen with a readable date for this price.
She has arrived.. not bothering with a "before" pic as the sellers pics are better then what my cam will produce.. will add pics after the boil is done and again after VC soak
well not great.. but short of whizzing it, i don't think it's getting any better for $25 bucks though, i can't complain
1 - What does "whizzing it" mean? 2 - What is involved in boiling it? 3 - What is "soaking it in VC"?
2. Boiling in distilled water... it's what is sounds like. I suspend the coin in a small muslin teabag in a pot of boiling distilled water.. this removes grease and dirt without any damage to the coin... 3. VC is "Verdi-Care" a harmless chemical dip... unless your "verdigris" in which case it's deadly. normal treatment is only a drop on each side and a rinse in distilled water.. but in a case of Heavy V like on this coin, I let it soak for about 30 minutes. 1. Whizzing.. a coin collectors nightmare.. is the use of a buffing wheel or dremel buffing tool on a coin. makes it all nice and shiny again we had a good discussion about this a while back.. can be read here... https://www.cointalk.com/threads/what-is-a-whizzed-coin.196059/
