You are correct about how I put my pants on and regarding my being human. And that means I am often incorrect. :goof: However, I didn't merely just keep reiterating my opinion that the coin graded VF or better. I went to the effort back up my opinion by including images of an example graded Fine. It shows far less detail than the coin in question, yet those who insist on grading the coin low continue to ignore it. And the coin which started this thread:
I respect your opiion, but i just can't compare these two coins . The coin you posted yes the details are less then the op's coin but it;s not an ugly looking coin it has decent eye apeal and know discoloration with unattractive toning problems ,totally two different coins i;m pretty sure if the coin you posted had the same ugly fields and black color the coin most likely would have been downgraded .I'm done with this thread. JC
OK, here's a Peace Dollar that is ugly/unattractive, with less detail than the 1928 being discussed. And rather than being graded VG (or lower) it was graded VF30 by ICG: And here's a VF20: I look forward to your explanations.
Maybe it's just me, I still think there's something in there that looks like an S, hidden by the toning. Or is that not where the mint mark should be?
Actually compared to the one I find on Heritage, it is the right location, but way TOO small and the center curve is entirely at the wrong angle.
The one I was holding in my hand was much lower... But these were punched by hand so im sure there are quite a few different mintmark placements on these coins.
What those two coins are not even near the op's coin for unatractiveness and ICGS . The first coin has one little spot on it maybe oxidation spot there's no uneven ugly dispurse black stuff like the op's just a oxidation spot which probably did take the grade down to one point . The second one still is not close to the OP's coin the eye apeal looks fine to me it;s not unattractive for a circulated coin There's my explainations JC
Hey Joe? What would that coin look like if it was properly cleaned/dipped? Toning may take away from eye appeal but dipping can fix that so if someone doesn't like the eye appeal, that can be easily fixed. hya: So the ugly toning does not affect grade and that's where you've been going wrong! :goof: As to the mint mark, see attached pics. :kewl: Ribbit
Well took me long enough, but I am starting to see an "S" where Toad has been pointing out. The toning, looks like somebody poured maple syrup on it, and it dried rather crusty on a hot summer day... Not saying that actually happened, but that is what it looks like. The coin has good details, but I am wondering if the toning would bump it's grade down, or even make the coin upgradeable, and it would be BB.
I don't see an S on your coin, sholom, I'll go out on a limb and say Philladelphia but still recommend an in-hand inspection by a qualified expert.
I have been having my doubt's if this is natural toning or not something else . When a coin has very bad toning it makes the coin apear ugly and dispursed in an unattractive way on the fields of the coin it can affect the grade remember what eye apeal is even with circulated coins. I have experianced this already by sending in a coin that was very unattractive with bad eye apeal, I thought it was very ugly toning so i took a shot at it and they sent the coin back, because of the uglyness of the fields. I did get rid of the coin in spit of the fields for cheap. I don't believe in dipping coins I will never do that i want the natural look of the coin. You asked me a question how would this coin looked dipped of course it will look better but it;s a fake cover up ,and not natural and you can tell that a coin was dipped. When a coin is dipped that's a danger zone for me anyway, and will still affect the grade. I do agree were toad sees the S I magnfied it 400 times the size and it looks like it is an S mint coin. JC Joe
The idea that a coin's grade can or should be lowered due to negative eye-appeal is correct. However, that occurs almost exclusively with uncirculated or Proof coins, as opposed to circulated coins. And even if you think it should apply to circulated coins, it wouldn't be nearly as drastic as some here seem to think. In other words, an ugly VF or XF coin doesn't become VG. Now, on the other hand, if the coin had been badly cleaned or damaged, it could correctly be net-graded down to VG.
Well then why did they send my coin back to me NGC;s when the coin i sent in was an unattractive ugly poor eye apeal toning XF circulated coin 1972 IKE dollar type 2 ? JC
I don't know what that has to do with what I wrote, and I'm not sure what your question was. Please look at what you wrote and you should see why. Did NGC body-bag the coin? Did they grade it? Did they refuse to accept it for grading?
