It may not be a mint mark but it's in the right location so the owner needs to examine it closely to make sure it isn't a mint mark. ;) However, if it were for sale on Ebay, I wouldn't buy it since the mint mark is questionable but it could be a 28-P anyways. :goofer:

The pics aren't good enough to call it either way. ;)

    Ribbit :)

Ps: The grade is much higher than G-4. :p That is NOT corrosion, it's ugly toning. :kewl:

    I've seen this brief description:

    • (F) Fine (Hair over is badly worn, wings heavily worn, no feathers show on right wing)
    • (VF) Very Fine (Hair over eye noticeably worn, wings worn).
    • (XF) Extra Fine (Hairline of brow worn, some wear on right wing).
    I've also seen this:

    • VF20 Very Fine Hair over eye well worn. Some strands over ear well defined. Some eagle feathers on top and outside edge of right wing will show.
    • EF40 Extremely Fine Hairlines over brow and ear are strong though slightly worn. Outside wing feathers at right and those at top are visible but faint.
So -- without the ugly toning, etc., it's clearly in the 20-40 range, according to this.

    Wow, feisty discussion.

I don't know if it is a mintmark or not, but I could swear I see an S inside this box. Is that the correct location?

BUT the grading companys see how ugly the toning is if it is that and will lower the grade because of the ugly discoloration of the fields they take that into consideration i'm just trying to be honest here alot of coins are overgraded and a vf is an overgrade for this coin because of the ugly black stuff on the coin in my opinion.

Sometimes the detail has nothing to do with it if a coins surface is so ugly. Some coins are bodybaged for that reason do research and see. I'M NOT BEING NEGATIVE I'M BEING HONEST IN MY OPINION I RATHER BE TRUTH FULL IN MY OPIION THEN DUSHONEST TO THE OP.

Yes -- I'm going to try to do that tonight when I get home.

Below is an NGC F12 Peace Dollar - it should be obvious to everyone that the 1928 which is the subject of this thread, displays considerably more detail.

A VF or XF coin is not down-graded to VG, due merely to ugly toning or discoloration. You can dislike the coin as much as you care to, for any reason that you want to. But that doesn't change the reality that it deserves better than VG.

I am doing research! To wit: this thread! ;)

To respond to others in the thread -- thanks for the support. I'm too new at this to be discouraged -- I'm learning from the vigorous debate, and I'm thankful that there are so many posts/opinions in this thread.

Further, it's not my coin (otherwise I'd keep it!). I'm in a win-win situation: if it's only worth $12, my friend will sell it to me for $12. If it's worth hundreds, then I can't afford it, and my friend will have a nice little windfall for his children.

I'll do my best to get a close-up scan of the mint-mark tonight and report back.

Well do you realize thaT some coins are body baged because of dis coloration or ulglyness of the fields that;s considered eye apeal and does drop the grade down substaintally

I had a coin sent in a morgan dollar to ngcs and the surface was so ugly and the details were in about a xf 40 ,they sent it back to me we can't slab this coin surface damage that's the experiance i had ,i did sell it for cheep through.

And you can't compare the coin you posted to the op's coin because of the discoloration of the fields and there;s also more distraction marks on the op's coin ETC ETC

There is a big difference between body-bagging a coin due to a problem, as compared to lowering a VF/XF coin to VG, due to discoloration or ugliness.

By the way, I feel that I have a decent grasp of grading and what's involved - I was a grader at NGC for 7 years.

So I have been grading coins for 40 years and that doe's not mean anything if you were a grader not to be disrespectfull in anyway.

Your views of the coin and others are different then my views and every other professional grader has different views when they grade a coin that;s why so many coins are graded lower or higher in there grades and probably not accurate.

Granted, grading is subjective in nature and there are often legitimate differences of opinion. However, at a certain point, an opinion can be so different from the majority of other, informed opinions, that it is in effect, incorrect. And that still takes subjectivity into account. That is especially true for easier-to-grade circulated coins, as opposed to MS or PF coins.

Hang it up, just coins. I cannot even read what you are trying to say any more.

Hopefully the OP is learning from everyone else disagreeing with your statements.

I'm getting into this one a little late. I bought a collection from a friend of mine a couple of years ago that included the 1928. It was of similar quality but didn't included the grunge on the coin. I rated it a very conservative F-12. If it wasn't for the grunge, I would probably rate this one an F-12 or maybe an VF-20. With the grunge, I'm going down to an VG-8. I'm still thinking that the coin may have a value of $250 but it may be hard to get it considering the poor curb appeal. I hate cleaned coins but what is the thought on this one?

Yep, my knowledge is limited. I have only been grading for 50 years, but I admit that I don't hold a candle next to Mark.
